Last night, I had the following conversation with Mrs Relkeel...

Her: What's your favourite Christmas song?

Me: 2000 Miles by The Pretenders

Her: That's not even a Christmas song

Me: Er...yes it is

Her: What? I would walk 2000 miles....

shrug:: shrug:: shrug::

Anyway, we've done this before, but what's yours?

I don't have a favourite, but there are plenty that I despise. In fact it would be my only top 5 on which Cliff Richard features prominently.

The Greg Lake one, can`t remember it`s name.
I believe in Father Christmas

I also believe it was banned in America for its subversive lyrics  Despite it's apparent innocous melody and its use of Prokofievs Lieutnent Kige suit, (which is archetypal Christmas) it was meant to be ironic. The lyrics upset the Christain lobby, as it's a protest song about all the things that Christmas isn't. The American's didn't take to the aethist overtures either.

"They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a silent night
They sold me a fairy story
'til I believed in the Israelite"

or......

"They said there'd be snow at Christmas
They said there'd be peace on Earth
But instead in just kept on raining
veiled tears for the virgin birth"

The video was shot in the middle of a desert (Ngev) in a deliberate attempt to cock a snook at the snowy type of traditional settings normally used.

O' Holy Night
This is one I only became aware of a few years ago. A senior pupil at my Mrs O's school did an amazing job of it and my wife remarked it was her favourite. I have to say, it is a beautiful, beautiful song.

However, I'm a rank sentimentalist and Away In A Manger is my favourite. (In Glasgow its called A Wean in a Manger.)

O Holy Night is stunning...very hard to hear a good version of it these days though.
I think its one of those songs that only very few people are able to sing it out properly.

The other night at my church, one of the girls did a good job, without being spectacular.

The best version I heard was from the Vienna Boys Choir some time back.
