Great to see Champagne Fever back again. Warms the cockles! Looked smart enough but what will they do with him/ what would you do with him?
Me, I'd stick him in the field outside my window to remind me of what a feeling I get from watching such an exciting horse.

I'm surprised he won today

I don't think he has a big race left in him either

Throw a dart at the national and hope he can scoot around for 3 miles and pray he stays the remainder?

Retire him. It was great to see him back but if his level is going to be a narrow victory over Lord Windermere (Wounded Warrior mistake before dropping backwards) then they should consider calling it a day for a horse with his past achievements.

I am of course being partly facetious as I'm sure he could mop up a few of these poorly contested listed / G3 races that are run in Ireland during the winter and who knows, with a couple of runs under his belt he could be a genuine 160 horse again.

He's just not a stayer. He'd need to be dropped in on the 2nd circuit in a national.

That Arkle should have him barred from 2m races. Still convinced he won. :ninja:

What a race that was, I was on Fever E/W ante post and place only on the day but jumped off my couch and punched the air when Scu and WW got up just at the sheer excitement of the race!

What happened to Western Warhorse? That broke me that race did. I was convinced CF would give us both the hat-trick of cheltenham wins.

Ran at Aintree after that in the manifesto but has never been seen since

Very noble fonz. Not sure that is the reaction I would have had in the immediate moment :D

Noble indeed. I may have punched something but it wasn't the air [emoji35]

Can some of you more intelligent people tell me how Roi des Francs was top weight in that race yesterday? On past achievements and appreciating cf and lw long absences I just can't see how he was giving weight away to the two class horses in the race? I'm obviously missing something. Cheers.

I'm not entirely sure, but Roi De Francs (or Roy De Franks as Dessie Scahill called him), won a couple of chases last season, including a G2 novice, and therefore presumably had penalties to carry under the conditions of the race.

Yeah, I had a look at what he won but compared with a gold cup and all that CF has won, a grade two novice shouldnt be worth ten pound more should it?

Penalties were;winner of one chase since May 1st 2015 4lb, winner of two chases (or one to the value of €12,000) 7lb, winner of three chases (or one worth €20,000) 10lb.

Roi Des Francs had won two chases since that date so would normally be a 7lb penalty but the second of them was worth 18,750 GBP which equated to EUR would be more than 20K, just about these days ;)

thus he carried a 10lb penalty.

Race conditions often penalise horses for recent performances, regardless of official ratings.

Edit: There you go, PTP. Lee is a proper anorak - I'm just a guesser.

Needless to say, it's unsurprising CF an LW fought out the finish, being incredibly well treated by conditions as they'd been off for a while. Clever targeting by both trainers really.

Fair do's, as I say, don't know enough about it myself. Was just comparing what they'd won amd thinking given how close it was to beating them both that extra weight made the difference I think.
