Firefighters tackling fireworks factory blaze
Sunday, 03 Dec 2006 17:35
Police were called to the scene at 13:50 GMT today Firefighters are on the scene after a fire broke out at a fireworks factory in East Sussex in what police describe as a "major incident".

Officers from Sussex police were called to Marlie Farm at the Broyle near Ringmer at about 13:50 GMT today.

There are reports of a number of casualties, some described as serious, but a police spokesperson was unable to divulge any further information at this stage.

But police have said that the immediate area has been evacuated.

Witness reports say that massive clouds of smoke and exploding fireworks can be seen for up to ten miles away, with the factory located between Lewes and Hailsham.

2 FIREMEN HAVE PERISHED AND 5 OTHERS SERIOUSLY INJURED..................

Ringmer is generally a fairly ordinary little village just outside Lewes (where Sheena West trains), home to two of my raceday colleagues who have a super stone farmhouse there. He hunts, she bakes wonderful fruit cakes which I buy and pass off as my own. The outskirts of the village are all big fields and trees, very pretty. The villagers will no doubt recall this as 'the year of the fire' from now on, as bugger-all else happens round there. Tragic losses so near to Christmas, but there always seem to be horrid disasters coinciding with the 'festive' season.
