I just had a long chat with the breeder of First Assignment.
He bought the dam of FA from Liam Cashman after her racing career, she won one p2p and was placed once over rules, rated 90.
By Dushyantor, an unsuccessful sire out of a Good Thyne mare whose dam was half sister to Maid OF Money the breeder took a chance with her.
Her first foal was tiny , a Milan filly who won a 6yo p2p maiden and was leased to Jennie Candlish, winning two for her breaking her leg on her final run.
FA as a foal was small and crooked with a poor coat,so much so breeder had second thoughts about even registering him.
Sold as a foal for 3500 the breeder said at the time Vinnie Roe stock could not be given away in a lucky bag.
Purchaser tried in vain to resell as a yearling and older and was subsequently sold at home to his p2p handler, winning a 4yo p2p maiden and selling for 40k to Ian Williams.
Now rated 146 with three wins and a decent future ahead of him, the breeder is lucky still to have the dam who has not bred since.
Another of his cull foals happens to be Scoir Mear, soon to win a decent chase off his 130 rating.
The beauty of breeding and racing is you never know.
Vinnie Roe stock have been crabbed by all and sundry for being small and plain but keep winning and First Assignment has transformed from ugly duckling to swan.
He has four mares in foal to Sandmason; the stud owner told him he had a full sister to Summerville Boy nobody wanted to try and she ended up horse meat.
