I'm looking at going to New Zealand at the end of next year but the one thing that puts me off is the long flight. I've read in various magazines, newspapers etc about how best to get an upgrade ie looking smart, some suggest booking in early, others suggest booking in late. Has anyone ever had the good fortune to be upgraded? And how likely or unlikely is it? Is it more likely with certain airlines?

In addition to looking smart and checking in early, a successful one if you're travelling alone on a busy flight is to say to your check-in agent that you are travelling alone, as they often will be looking to move people up.
