Foiled betting plot

Around 1979-1982 I was part owner of 'Castle Pride' and unfortunately victim of a 'busted' plot.

Over our Christmas table the event resurrected itself.

My memory was that CPs 'busted plot' run at Perth was its first or second run. But my Dad reckons it had previously run and won 6 times. I no longer have my records to hand so could anyone oblige in order to settle the matter.

Thanks in anticipation - MR2

No worries, MR2.

He was foaled in 1969 and had his first taste of hurdles in 1973/74, with the following record:

Teesside 8th (to Cancello - hurdles debut)
Wetherby 5th
Ayr 5th (to Rubstic)
Sedgefield 3rd
Ayr 3rd
Doncaster 2nd
Doncaster U/R

No run at Perth that season, and no previous Flat wins (just one run as a 3-y-o if my records are correct, although he ran a few times without joy in 1975)

Thanks, Rory.

Without wishing to put you to any trouble. The 'busted plot' with some serious complications involving racecourse securities happened when I was 19/20/21 so that would put the event at 1979 to 1982.

Was there another Castle Pride?

The syndicate owned a number of horses including 'Gala Lad' (one eyed multiple winner at courses when he could see the rails)

I should have realised that the game was up when I saw a notice behind the bookie's counter that read 'we are happy to take take bets on Castle Pride today but will be placing them to one side' - whatever that meant!

Just the one Castle Pride - further digging shows he won twice over hurdles in 1974/75, and that the failed gamble came on his third outing of the 1977/78 season (all 3 runs in sellers), after which he was sold for 570 gns at Doncaster in May, and never ran under Rules again.

Sadly, I don't have full formbooks for 1974/75 or 1977/78, so I can't give any more details.

Whatever happened to Steve Norton? The trainer based near Barnsley, South Yorkshire was a favourite of mine but just disappeared from the racing pages sometime ago. I'd love to know if he is OK. Hope you can help.

Answer: As far as I can ascertain Steve Norton retired from training at the end of the 1995 season.

His best year was 1992 when he trained 27 winners from 187 runners amassing total prize money of £153,412.

However in 1995 he only trained 8 winners from 128 runners with total prize money of £53,389.
