Foot & Mouth

It makes me puke that every animal within a county has to be murdered coz of this.
In the last outbreak I was ashamed watching this government of ###### running around making bonfires killing everything. F*****G shame on them

Following the floods, that's just about the worst news possible

There are quite a few wild boar escapees in Southern England, and a large number of wild deer. F&M is spread by cloven hoofed animals, and you will never eradicate it whilst these are roaming free, sadly.

They've changed the lsw since then so your animals no longer really belong to you in any meaningful sense - and you can get a criminal record iirc for 'obstructing' the slaughter. They have far more power now - It's all too depressing

:D

Seriously though, fingers crossed DEFRA are able to contain this latest outbreak quickly.

And rightly so HS - it's pointless having laws, health regulations etc if you can't implement them.
I was chastised-bollocked, called from my hole to my pole, after I put a thread on here with regards SHAMBO (Now the whole herd, of them there Monks are being tested and they think they are ALL infected) O-K its not as severe as F&M but still they(DEFRA or and the Welsh office) need to have implemented any precautions such as them having to be slaughtered!! and I think this sort of T-B CAN BE passed on to humans ...
While its a sad state of affairs some things in life must be done, lets hope its contained in the place of this outbreak, its as Harry said it was horrendous to see these animals being slaughtered in their thousands, lets just hope it does not come to this AGAIN................... :( cry

I hope it doesn't come to that Merlin but it doesn't mean that we should risk the health of the nation over it and also that we should have laws you can't implement, similarly you can be arrested in your own home so technically under what HS points out you can't possibly own it - also see compulsory purchase orders for something similar.

 I see it's come from a government building in Pirbright, this strain was included in vaccines, they produced, and were marketed by a private company, and as never ever been found in animals here in the U-K..............this throws a further fly in the ointment and adds another scenario to this case in particular ..........

Dims I underestimated to be on the safe side, you know what SOME are like on here! you get accused of hyping things up, but in reality, yes I also would not like to see another 2001...........and its obvious implications, and the banning of racing etc etc

I see the government may have some serious questions to answer if the source of the F&M outbreak is proven to be from a nearby laboratory. I can almost hear the farmers picking up the phones and enquirying who they speak to to place their compensation claims.

A lot more to come out about this in the next few days/weeks methinks.

I read an article in my left-winged german newspaper about the F&M, and they stated a couple of things that I wasnt´aware of, don´t know whether they have been mentioned before:

a) Vaccination against F&M was -even 6 years ago- dropped by the government on request and certain pressure from the main food-companies such as Nestlé etc., as any country who does vaccinate against this disease would loose its "disease-free" status for a year, so export would be much more difficult.

b) F&M is by no means lethal, as I thought, and only young animals might die of it. Older animals get over it in about 10-14 days and are perfectly healthy after, but off course must not get in the food chain.

It is not about animal lifes or anything, just pure commercial reasons behind, as always, as it is the meat INDUSTRY, what else.
