Tricky one that. Nirvana may take it one their unplugged set which was very good. Soungarden are third for me (or 4th or 5th behind the Pumpkins/Pavement) so I vote for Nirvana, despite Ten.

Pearl Jam, but only because I liked Ten a lot. Would have voted for the Pumpkins had they been there.

I think Pearl Jam have a better body of work overall. Not sure Nirvana would have matched them even if Kurt had lived, i thought In Utero was average.

Pixies were probably better than any of them, but were from a different time.

Nirvana in a hack canter.

Pearl Jam are a crock of shite.

For Pearl Jam, substitute Pixies for me.... seen them live a few times and had 2 of their albums, but never, ever got anywhere close to liking them.

Pumpkins would have had my vote of those mentioned.

Euro, I know that you take your music seriously. Almost certainly more seriously than I do. But some people have blind spots about some things. Pearl Jam have released some of the most banal recordings in the past ten years. No Code and Riot Act being two lowlights.

Sure, they have had a couple of decent albums since Ten, but if you throw enough shite at a wall, some of it is bound to stick.

On the balance of evidence, the jury has come down with the following verdict on the charge of being a crock of shite:

GUILTY

Pearl Jam are ropey enough for me too. Ok but not great. Pumpkins 'Adore' after MCIS was weak, but I put that down to losing their drummer, who came back for 'Machina', which is excellent (IMO).

This thread makes me feel my age. Stones v Beatles v Pink Floyd is more my cuppa tea...

The last band which registered with me at all was Pulp. Jarvis Cocker is great, unique. The Common People is amazing [as Zara would say]
I got max kudos for taking two sons of two of my cousins to a PV in a friend's gallery a few years ago, and Jarvis was there. Respect!
