I’m glad that MrB has just pointed out where the blogs can be found. My last blog post was in October when we were just back from Madeira - it’s April now, we’re there again and it’s a good discipline not being able to bet (not easily, anyway) in the fag-end of the jumps season and the new shoots of the flat as horses are just getting started. So, it’s a watching brief trying to get the notebook going.

The jumps is finishing with the battle for the trainers championship and Dan Skelton isn’t given much chance against the Willie Mullins juggernaut. I’m not so sure, DS has opened the gap a little and I remember last year that he said his mistake was not holding a few back for the final furlong. It might not be as easy for WM as the market seems to think.

So far on the flat those I wanted to watch have mostly needed the run, so I’d be on a fair losing run if I’d been tempted at home. I certainly would have backed Exclamation who finished strongly in the Brocklesby after a slow start. This time he was 3rd at 5/1, more smartly way and again strong in the finish, but the first two looked a class apart and he couldn’t lay a hoof on them. Wait for six furlongs or lower class for him.

Pellitory WON nicely at 25/1, but not that disappointing to miss since I wouldn’t have been backing him anyway. He was always just a watch.

PELLITORY is a massive horse who has done all his work with Wimbledon Hawkeye [stable companion]. We've had this race planned the whole season and you get here and think it's a strong race but it was a learning curve today to see whether we were a handicapper or a bit better. He's got a French Guineas entry and we'll think about it but he's a lovely horse with a great future - James Owen, trainer, speaking to Racing TV.

Today, the watchers are Tatterstall and Ivatt at Musselburgh

I will be very disappointed if he doesn't win.” Said Charlie Fellowes before the Ivatt race and disappointed he was. Had a go when push came to shove, but wasn’t given a hard time when he didn’t find much. Jury out as to whether he needed the run or is not as good as CF thought. The other one was a non-runner.

And tomorrow at Redcar - 1:25 - the unraced Earthwatch is one to watch.

Shunted across the track a bit out of the stalls, he raced in last until a furlong out and finished quite well without being put under any pressure. A reasonable introductory run and a watch again next time.

Two watchers at Epsom today. 2:10 - Devil’s Advocate and 3:20 - Master Builder and one at Yarmouth 5:15 - La Fleur Petra’s

So far most watchers haven’t made it as far as my notebook!!

Devil’s Advocate in the right position with a couple to go, but found nothing and allowed to coast in. Master Builder probably needs longer and forget La Fleur Petra’s. Notebook stays empty of these three.

Master Builder's trainer interviewed before race and said master builder would need the race and the ebor was the horses main target.

Watching again. Tamfana was unlucky in the 1000 Guineas and put matters right in the Sun Chariot. She carries a penalty for that and has to give weight to the boys which may make the difference in the B365 Mile.

Beckett thinks I Am I Said has done very well over the winter, but will need the run (as will most) in the Classic Trial.

just thought I would bang this up here to remind us about SATURN, one of the guys on here was in Jessies yard when it was a three year old and was told it was very smart...........

this was in Jessies stables tour yesterday

The Tipster

Saturn is lightly raced for a five-year-old, but has a good recent win record and this might be the year that he fulfils his enormous potential. He is bred to be top-class as a son of the multiple Group 1 winner Alpha Centauri, but has a lot more stamina than his dam and looks capable of developing into a classy performer over staying trips this season. Royal Ascot could be on his agenda.

grown up a lot.

He had a setback last season and the vets at Anglesey Lodge did an unbelievable job with him, they worked tirelessly. He was only just ready to start off at Navan when he won on his return and there should be loads more to come from him this season. We didn't have him fully wound up because we said it would probably be the end of April or middle of May before we got him out, but then the dry spell came and we said we'd run him. Scott [McCullagh] said he took two big blows and is going to improve no end. He's big and strong, still a full horse, and I think we're only starting to see the best of him – he was a very playful young horse and is now much more professional. I'd imagine he'll run in one of the staying races at Royal Ascot and I hope we have an exciting season with him. Jessie
