Trainer Frances Crowley is set to quit the training ranks.

Frances, married to leading rider Pat Smullen, has had a lean year with only one winner on the flat.

The 34-year-old hit the heights when Saoire landed the Boylesports 1000 Guineas at the Curragh in 2005 and also trained top class chaser Sackville.

Yep she told the yard last week giving them very little notice.

Rumours of a couple of other Curragh based trainers in a little bit of trouble too.

Personally I think she made a mistake concentrating on the flat. She had some decent owners over jumps and would surely have done well. Other that the Guines win she has done nothing really ont he flat and I just think it is so hard to compete on the flat with a tight budget. At least over jumps, cheaper horses do well on a regular basis. I'm sure the family won't be destitute anyway with Pat making a decent income. The question is what are Pat's prospects like when Weld packs it in?

Never would have thought it was an economic decision for her, I thought it was a personal decision. She has proven over the years she can train a horse..pity.
