Our first meeting of the season at Brighton, and the course cunningly hoping to catch post-work punters. The 'free' applies to the Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure, with the usual upgrade to Premier available once there. Hope the weather's like yesterday, not today - fleeces back on and drizzle on and off, just to make it dreary as well as cold!

Just to say that, as of today, Brighton has sent out some 3,500 free tickets already for next week's kick-off. What I think you'll find is that most courses won't be letting walk-ups in for free on the day - the free tickets have to be claimed and presented at the entrance to the course. Upgrades will be obtainable once inside. Worth checking before anyone assumes it's on a free-for-all basis.

Updates to our pre-meeting briefing today include the news that a lot of work's been done on the course to remove thatch, which has a way of not letting grass receive the water it should, and costing racecourses a fortune in water bills, as well as encouraging the growth of nematodes, as per Chepstow's disaster a season back. This should mean that horses are presented with a more regular surface to run on, and that any watering will go where it's needed (into the plant growth) and not just get whipped away by the wind.

We will also be offering winning connections some sort of finger-buffet style snacks, I understand, instead of just crisps and Quality Street - we'll see how those are received. And real champagne, instead of Cava, although I hope it isn't a cheap bubbly and thus thin and acidy. We may not offer much in prize money, but we'll try to make up a bit with some decent congratulations!
