When in Spain I frequently see and enjoy a singer from Ireland called Dicky Rock.He is reputed to have had 13 Irish number 1's. Do you know of him and is he as popular as his compere makes out? Apparently he appears on TV a fair bit.
Dickie Rock was front man to Irelands top showband, The Miami Showband. The Miami showband's bus was blown up by loyalist terrorist killing a few of the band.
Very hard working band that trawled the length and breadth of the country. Later successful as a singer in the Casinos in the states. Very professional entertainer and will still attract a regular crowd.
Most famous for his wig and his fans' favourite phrase "Spit on me Dickie".
Part of the showband era in 50s - 60s ireland. Filling out dance halls length and breath of teh country. it seemed to be catholic Ireland youth only way of talking/carousing with the opposite sex back then. He sang twice sang in teh Eurovision, i think.
There was a documentary made about him at one stage back when he was big. Following Dickie around the place. It included one of the funniest scenes that Ive seen on TV. He was narrating a piece -with him in his own kitchen on screen - saying that fame as two sides, that all the attention he gets from the ladies was nice. Just then the phone rang in the kitchen and Dickie got up and answered it.
Some lad on the phone says.
"Is this Dickie Rock"
"Yes"
"You're an awful eejit"
Showing the other side of being famous, and obviously it was the most offensive thing that could be said back then on RTE.
His son Richie Rock was one of the original members of Boyzone, but had even less talent (with other issues as well) and left the band before they had any success. He is in the background that clip on the late late show that is often shown, where they are dncing and making tools of themselves. (Why change the formula)
Bloody hell, thanks for that men. He performs for free in the hotel where we stay in Benalmadena. His mate there, whose show he guests on, is Pierce Webb, is also Irish but I presume not as famous.
It's an RCI Timeshare hotel but he may have some kind of investment in it of course. I don't really care, he's such a damn good entertainer. His Frank Sinatra renditions are as good as any I've seen, apart from the original, of course.
Appeared on the Late Late Show a couple of months ago.His insincerity was there for all to see but when he spoke of the death of his son who had some sort of disabiliy you had to feel for the guy.
The first time my mother and her sisters went to London the visit was cut short to go home and see DR perform.
Sorry, Brian, I thought you were still on a sabattical or I would never have been so presumptious. Brighton next year, perhaps, following Carnaby's Wooden Heart?
