I put up the Christmas tree today. Normally I find I'm putting it up on Massey-Ferguson day but I think the racing calendar must be running as late as it can this season so up it went today.

Credit to the old beast, though. It put up a bit of a fight and I've got blisters wth trying to get the base screws in tight enough to keep it up straight. But, it's looking like - in the words of the Nat King Cole song - the happiest Christmas tree, so I might get a few more years out of it yet. It's only about 20 years old so here's to another 20...

[Right. Let's get the smut alert out of the way...]

There's a brilliant idea down this way where you can rent a live Christmas tree for the festive period. It then goes back, still rooted in its bucket, to the Christmas tree farmers, who'll keep it for you (they tag them with your name) for next year, and next... Seems a nice, 'green' way of using fresh, live trees with their lovely smell. I hate to see real trees which have been cut down just for a couple of weeks' decoration. I don't really like fake trees, either, although I realise they're possibly forgivable if you don't have a garden in which to grow one to decorate and light up outside, which would be my favourite.

That would tempt me to use a real tree.

Yes, if I lived in a house instead of a small flat, that's what I'd do. I love the idea that you can host 'your' tree for years to come!

To help me get further in the mood I watched The Bishop's Wife tonight.

It probably isn't as well known as It's A Wonderful Life but it's a fantastic little Christmas film and is 100x better than the modern remake The Vicar's Wife (Denzel Washington / Whitney Houston).

Oh, God, I'm dreading the usual outpouring of sentimental slosh on telly, which seems to be de rigeur every December, as if somehow one has to turn off normal life and view everything through rose-tinted specs. (Or Oxfam's rose-tinted specs in your case, Dessie!) Never mind a surfeit of food and drink in battleship proportions, it's all this gooey gunk on film that gives me indigestion. Just not necessary - a few for kiddywinkles, okay, but please can't adults be spared the onslaught of celluloid over-heartiness, or moral messaging!

Not now the arseholes have vandalised it !!!

Stupid idiots - theres a reason that they had that conical one, what the ferk is the point of having a real tree when they had to have boardings round it and bloody great guy ropes to make sure it doesnt get blown over - and the new (admittedly looking not a lot like a tree!) one didnt need any of that - and it was really pretty when it got dark and the lights showed up properly.

Take it away and dont have a bloody tree IMO - what a total waste of £14,000 !!!!

eta - Im pretty sure that they only charge the web price once, not annually - over the course of 3 or 4 years, youve got a bargain!

Vandal! Leave the bloody countryside alone!

Troods - I thought the cone looked fabulous lit by night. We had a big feature on it on 'South Today' and I really liked its modern, rather cuddly look. Feckin vandals - no sense of pleasure for others in them at all. I'm fed up with all this social irresponsibility. Let's just find 'em, wire 'em into the national grid, and fire 'em up at night instead!

What made it worse is that the vandals are the people who were campaigning against it - these are grown ups - not bored teens (not that being a bored teen would make it any better!) ???!!!!!!! ( hence my dont have one at all comment - they dont deserve it !!)

and yes - it was lovely all lit up - apparently loads of toddlers were going up to it and hugging it cos they all liked it so much....

The idiocy of some people really beggars belief sometimes....
