A girl has been raped by a stranger as she slept in bed in what police describe as "every parent's nightmare".

The child, aged under 10, was attacked at her home in Basildon, Essex, between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

She is being interviewed and cared for by specialist officers.

Five other children - plus the victim's mother - were in the house at the time of the attack.

The girl has managed to give police a description of her attacker, Chief Insp Graham Carey told Sky News.

He was described a black, aged around 18 to 20, with black, Afro-style hair and a skinny build.

The girl said his teeth were dirty, although he had one particularly clean tooth.

His trousers had splits or tears in, according to current fashion, and there was a chain hanging at the side.

He also wore a grey T shirt or top with darker writing all over it.

"It is an horrendous incident for the family and for the victim," the chief inspector said.

Detectives say the child told her mother of the attack early on Thursday.

There was no immediate sign of a forced entry to house on the Craylands estate, but a forensic examination of the scene was still going on.

Chief Insp Carey appealed for help in finding the attacker, asking for people to come forward if they recognised the description.

How horrendous and scary is this? We had a murder 2 minutes round the corner from my house last year where the guy broke in and stabbed a girl to death, thy still haven't caught him.

As a mother to three small daughters that frightens the living daylights out of me.

Griffin: if you're not sure how secure your home is, especially any unauthorized access, your local Crime Prevention Officer will be happy to send you literature or arrange a home visit to check things out for you. Forgive me if you already know this, but some folks don't know the service is available through the Police, and it can give tremendous peace of mind to know you're as secure as possible, particularly when you have kids. (They'll also check outside - the garden, where you leave ladders, drainpipe situation, etc. and make recommendations.)
