Just started doing my homework for the Land Rover sale and wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I get the strong impression that the quality is not as good as previous years. Some new and unproven sires in there to mix it up with the older stalwarts and judged on the recent prices, it will be a buyers market. Hoping to pick up something nice.

So whose hot and whose not on the stallion list and why?? I see Cathcher in the Rye has some entries. they must be his first crop. A fair few french breds and even one by Sadlers Wells. The usual dose of Presenting, Old Vic, Milan, Saddlers Hall etc etc.

For what its worth, I like Bach alot as a potentially high class sire. Right breeding, right attitude and took plenty of racing after a serious injury.

Got another syndicate going this year. It was certainly tough going and hopefully nobody will fall out between now and then. Have to take three shares myself but hoping to offload a few before or after the event. Budget is €25k so you'd hope to pick up something nice but if we don't see anything, I'm happy to wait for the Derby sale.

The Sadlers Wells is below. Lot 74. what gets me is the number of offspring that they don't show, simply because they are no good (or more likely want to show some black type four generations back). They fail to mention this ones five year old full sister who has run twice for Magnier/Conor O'Dwyer, finishing 6 of 15 and 5 of 9 in two bumpers.

Yes I'd like Bach and Generous amongst others.

Would you consider buying something stout off the flat with proven ability but potential to improve for your syndicate ?

I'm very much reliant on our trainer to pick them out for me and he has a very strong dislike for buying off the flat. It works for some, and not for others and he just feels they come with too many problems and you need to have someone who can give you the real inside line. Colm went over to Newmarket last year looking at horses and had his card very well marked by a native (an old friend), but clearly everyone else did too and the ten or fifteen he went over to see all made decent money. I'd say it's still the same now and while someone will come back and tell me that X was bought for 5k and went onto win Y, I think you should stick with the knitting and if our trainer is happier picking a rough diamond from a bunch of unraced horses then so be it. I don't complain too much about he horses he has bought for us so far.....well just the one but I don't talk about him anymore!!! The other three have been good to great!!

Bach is a stallion we looked at last year but nothing took our eye. I think he has a few more there this year.

You'd be surprised how cheaply you can buy a nice enough type of horse in a French claiming horse for Cantoris - you'd be forgoing any bumper prospects and would be stuck going novice hurdling straight away but the Auteuil claiming hurdles you can pick a horse who can be competitive up for 10-12k, it'll be race fit and have proven form on the racecourse. Just a matter of finding one with scope - Pipe used to claim the first 4 or 5 in a race and then sell them on at 4 times what he paid for them.

Colm has probably already looked at this option ala the HIT sales in Newmarket but IMO it would take any risk out of buying a donkey (though that doesn't seem a problem with Colm anyway).
