Gold Cup (Ascot)

Last Train was most disappointing last time out but beat his conqueror that day on his previous start. Does seem a bit overpriced.

Taking a small chance on biographer, tiger cliff given too much to do yesterday and bio form through him suggests he'll stay to me. Good luck, queens winner tomorrow be bold sniper, or so I've been told...

Cheers, Steve.

I read your piece in the Weekender today. I think it's between Estimate and Simenon. I marginally favour the latter.

I don't understand why Simenon is so short. He was eye catching at Chester but that was a terrible race.

Rite of Passage or Last Train for me. Last year's race was a poor renewal and I'd be against all of the principles running again.

I think this is another race well short of G1 standard. Simenon is short because even allowing for the Chester Cup being a touch substandard and it being a moderately run affair, Simenon looked simply in a different class and would have been a comfortable winner with a clear run. Given his abundant stamina, a stronger race would have suited him better and the overall level of the form hints at his having improved again this year.

There are question marks over the other principals so I reckon he's entitled to be in the first two in the market.

Personally I'd rather have an open race, that was short of group 1 standard, than a procession every year won by the same horse at odds on in this race!

To quote from Steve on the preview he's written.

"The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Repeater, by Montjeu out of a Mark Of Esteem mare, should also stay well enough in theory but may be out of his depth in terms of class."

That is what I thought, i really fancy he'll stay all day, and i'm backing him regardless of class doubts as we all know how Sir Mark Prescott can bring a horse through. It's not a handicap but he's still the dark horse in the race I feel.

Fair enough and each to his own and all that.

My view is that we have handicaps and other Group and/or Listed events with penalty systems to provide open races but when it comes to G1s I want to see the cream rise to the top.

Would the last couple of seasons have been better without Frankel?

Just because there's a standout candidate doesn't mean it can't be an exciting or interesting race; nor does it mean they don't provide betting value. I reckon there are plenty of races with standout candidates but that isn't always reflected in the betting.

Yeah I hear what you're saying, i guess it just makes a change in this particular race for it to be so open.

I've just been outside and been shite on by a seagull. I hope it brings myself and the foruim an abundance of good luck today!:)

They say 'the bigger the field, the bigger the certainty' and I'm beginning to feel that way about SIMENON. He was just so impressive here last year, we all saw the run in the Chester Cup, they'll have to build a brick wall to stop him getting into the first 4, 8/1, great bet.

Declan McDonogh to land an overdue Group 1 success outside of Ireland. There is no stronger jockey in a finish.

I backed both Estimate (7/1) and Simenon (8/1) at 3/1 coupled but I can't help thinking Simenon would have won if Murtagh had been closer to Estimate throughout. The pace looked moderate.

For a few strides I thought Simenon was going to get up, but well done to the winner.

...for a few strides I thought the same, but she dug in well. Disappointed Last Train couldn't show up better.

The two I went to back (Remote being the other) obliged, together with three of four place bets. So I've had a good day at last this week. Knackered now... I'm in the armchair at home tomorrow!
