Muggings in Essex are expected to soar following the news as reported in the Times.

"Gold, the most traditional safe haven, also leapt again, adding to a record one-day rise on Wednesday to jump by another 7.7 per cent above $900 an ounce to close at $916.10"

When everything else goes belly-up, they all turn to gold. I keep telling Mrs O not to pawn all the stuff I lavish on her.

I've never fully understood this. What happens when someone points out that Gold is essentially useless, and has no purpose beyond some ancient sense of percieved decoration. It's not exactly that rare is it. I understand it's a store of value, but if the free marketeers amongst you believe everything should be valued according to what it can be used for, then surely an alloy like steel is of greater utility

Me neither.

Mike Harding once commented that poor men spend their lives digging up gold from deep in the earth so that rich men may bury it again deep in the earth.
