Got A 4x4? Live In London?

a 4x4 is plain daft in central london

But

This is more to do with ken's hatred of the typical 4x4 owner than any emmisions problem

The extension of the charge westwards is a disgrace too and clearly aimed solely at the same people. Traffic congestion in the kensington earls court areas of london is not as bad as islington and some areas east of city. but would he extend it there? would he f

(for the record im not affected by this)

Suprised he hasnt banned women from driving cars too, judging by some of the people he virtually worships....

It's yet another stealth tax. If these 'Chelsea Tractors' really are a threat to the city's environment, just ban them from going in there.

The thing that bothers me most about this (even though it's unlikely to affect me as I don't drive in central London) is that MPVs will probably fall into this catagory. I don't own an MPV as a status symbol or for the sheer fun of it, I own one because it's the only car all of my children can safely travel in together. So he's penalising large families. That's not fair at all. It's hard, not to mention expensive enough, raising a family as it is without that added burden.

The £25 per day charge is only for cars emitting more than 225g of co2 per k, there must be any number of MPVs that are well under that.

The zero rate not only includes some diesel cars but also some petrol models as well eg Corsa.

My LPG BMW AND hubbies 3.0 litre Omega estate both produce negligable CO2 - another reason for converting :)

How many children have you got? More than three fair enough, three or fewer an MPV is not needed. I`m one of three and we managed to get into a Vauxhall Viva no trouble at all when i was a kid.

and the tube system is shocking! Indeed, it is hell!! How does Ken expect people to travel??? Buses are always busy as well.

Biking to work in a £500 suit?? Yeah right!!

I'm blessed  with four daughters ranging in age from nine down to almost eight months. My old car was an Astra estate and Mr GG wanted me to keep it and for him to buy a motorbike. He thought that when we all went out together it'd be cheaper for him to follow us on the bike! Stupid boy. We bought a second hand diesel VW Sharan shortly before the arrival of number four. We had no choice really.

ken's policies on just about everything are based upon his bigotry.

If he could exempt from tax certain religous and racial minorities and hammer others, he probably would do so...

He pidgeonholes the world into goodies and baddies.(simple minded thinking and bigotry/racism are of course strong features of the far left) which is why he gave a platform to a islamist terrorist supporter shortly after 7/7....

There would (to my mind) be very few MPV's that produce this much C02 - not many MPV's have 3 litre plus engines commonly found in the popular 4x4 models.

An RAC Foundation survey recently found that the worst congestion was in streets in North, East and South London. As Edmund King, executive director of the foundation, says: “There is no possible logic for singling out West London for this proposed extension. There are many other areas that are far more congested. Many key routes that cross the proposed new charging zone have very little congestion at all. Without people coming into the district, many by car, the area would die.”

There is a possible logic for singling out west london

Bigoted hatred of the wealthy (whilst ignoring the many relatively poor who live on estates in pimlico and kensington)

And that has as much to do with your personal prejudices as it does Ken Livingstone's

Prejudices? Clivex? Surely you jest...

"Simple-minded thinking and bigotry/racism are of course strong features of the far left... "   Ah yes, those infamously Left-wing Nazis, Boers, Argentinian and Chilean generales... :brows:

4 x 4s are outrageous petrol consumers. My cousin is selling one - a Range Rover, which does 20 miles to the gallon. It was bought because her husband likes to kid himself that, with only 7.5 acres, he's some sort of vast estate holder. With her A-class Merc and his BMW, they're hardly the best examples of eco-consciousness. The husband also has a quad bike, which he now prefers to rort around the 'estate' on, so the Ranger can go. They previously had an MPV as she had six children of school age at one time, but now that all but two are living away from home, the little Merc is ideal. I still don't think the husband 'needs' the BMW, but it's very difficult to persuade a petrolhead to give up one, let alone two, posing symbols in one year.

There's such a brilliant selection of ways to get about, from the Tube, the buses, and taxis by the thousand, that keeping a car for use in the City would be crazy. Even if your work required travel outside, you'd be more relaxed if you took a train to the main town or city, and then taxiied. You could use a laptop, mobile, mini-printer, paper shredder, mini-FAX, videolink... much to the annoyance of other passengers, of course, but far more useful than sitting for hours in a traffic queue and paying a year's mortgage to park for a day!

That's a stunna, bets!! God, I love this forum so - the brilliant stuff that people have squirrelled away for our delight never stops amazing me.

Rather a stupid comment giuven the record of the left wing regimes around the world

Of course Ken is bigoted

He barely denies it and certainly tehre is one race in particular which seems to have been targeted by his comments in an interesting way, lets say, on a number of occasions

and he gives platforms to

1. Muslims who support even the extreme elements of sharia law

2. The IRA

3. A leader who courts Iran and is an apologist for Mugabe and North korea (FFS)

what more evidence do you need?

and to imply that racism is the preserve of the far right is laughable

Clivex, I've refrained from saying so up until now, but I think you're a blinkered bigot who makes shallow and uninformed attempts at controversy in order to draw attention to yourself, rather than the subject. The Right is full of atrocious despots who've done terrible damage to their nations and have persecuted any dissident voices to the point of annihilation. You haven't included it in your condemnation - I wonder why? No, don't bother - you haven't been capable of taking a balanced view so far, so you won't miraculously be now.

You have no sense of objective perspective in your dialogue but, when sensing any threat of dissent, feebly hope that being rude to people you've never met (and who will probably be delighted to keep it that way) will stop them from taking you on. However, Warbler has already brilliantly and relentlessly exposed your several serious shortcomings in logic, your subjectivity, bias in the face of ignorance of facts, ad infinitum ad nauseum, so I don't need to waste my time on you again.
