JOHNNY HENDERSON GRAND ANNUAL CHASE – Analysis

Nicky Henderson has entered six of the 58 horses that make up this year’s entry for the two mile handicap chase that carries his late father’s name. Henderson landed the prize in 2006 with Greenhope and could be represented by French Opera, who landed a hat-trick when scoring back-to-back wins at Cheltenham in November and December, as well as My Petra, Pepsyrock, Dave’s Dream, First Point and smart novice You’re The Top.
Free World was second to French Opera in December and is part of a strong Paul Nicholls trained quartet that also includes high-class novice Tataniano, I’msingingtheblues and 2009 Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase hero Chapoturgeon.
Last year’s winner, the Alan King-trained Oh Crick, could bid for a repeat, while the Venetia Williams-trained Green Belt Elite may attempt to carry this season’s fine form into the race.
Tom George has entered last term’s Grade Two Manifesto Novices’ Chase winner Tartak, Nick Williams could run Grade Two William Hill Gold Cup runner-up Cornas, Charlie Mann has engaged the Grade Two-winning novice Red Admiral, while Oiseau De Nuit, runner-up to Kalahari King at Doncaster last time, could represent Colin Tizzard.
David Pipe’s four entries include Consigliere and Leo’s Lucky Star, while Henry Daly has engaged My Moment.
An interesting nine-strong Irish entry includes 2006 Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Newmill, trained by John Murphy, as well as the Henry de Bromhead trained An Cathaoir Mor, winner of the Grade One Arkle Novice Chase at Leopardstown on January 24.
Noel Meade has engaged top-class hurdler Jered and Nicanor, who saw off Denman to win the 2006 running of the Grade One Neptune Investment Management Hurdle and was runner-up to An Cathaoir Mor at Fairyhouse on January 17.
Also among the Irish entry are the Willie Mullins-trained Scotsirish and Jayo, as well as the Tommy Stack-trained Perce Rock and the Tom Mullins-trained Fosters Cross.

THE JOHNNY HENDERSON GRAND ANNUAL CHASE CHALLENGE CUP FACTS & FIGURES
1. The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase is the oldest race at The Festival, and the oldest in the chasing calendar. It was first run at Andoversford, near Cheltenham, in April, 1834, over three miles of open country.
2. Johnny Henderson’s name was added to the race title in 2005. Henderson, who died in December, 2003, was aware in 1963 that there was a danger that property developers would buy Cheltenham racecourse, so together with other Jockey Club members he formed Racecourse Holdings Trust, a non-profit-making organisation, that raised £240,000 to purchase the racecourse and safeguard its future. RHT - which subsequently changed its named to Jockey Club Racecourses - is still
Cheltenham’s parent company and now owns 13 British racecourses. Henderson, whose son Nicky has enjoyed great success at Cheltenham as a trainer, served as patron at the course until his death.
3. The race died out in the 1860s, like much of the steeplechasing calendar, but was revived at the turn of the century. In fact, for some time, it was the single most important National Hunt race, surpassing even the Grand National. During the early 1900s, it was held at Melton Mowbray, Leicester and Warwick, before finally returning to Cheltenham in 1913.
4. The longest-priced post-war winner is Hipparchus at 100/1 in 1954.
5. The fastest winning time was recorded by Samakaan when successful in 2000 in 3m 52.40s. This beat a record of 3m 54.20s set by Hal’s Farewell back in 1968.
6. The 2006 renewal provided an emotional success for trainer Nicky Henderson with Greenhope, in the race named after his father.

I like Song Of Songs in this. He's down to a decent mark and his last run was quite eyecatching. He hasn't won at Cheltenham but was going like a winner at the two mile point in the Coral Cup a couple of years back.

Yikes - just realised I have backed 5 winners out of the last 7 in this - had no idea!

Didn't get Oh Crick or Greenhope. Don't remember winning much money though - they were probably the last legs of failed lucky 15's..

My record is better than I imagined too:

Tiger Cry
Fota Island
Palarshan
Fadoudal du cochet
Space Trucker

and others going further back.

I must pay more attention to it this year!

It's just that I tend to be aware which races I've giot a good record in (Grand national, totesport trophy etc, but maybe because this is just one of so many top races over the meeting and I bet in so many I tend to focus on how I've got on at the end of the week rather than in individual events. I kind of go through the motions in most of the races looking for value here and there rather than have a heavy bet on one winner. Maybe I should treat the Grand Annual more like a big Saturday handicap. (but then again, I thought I did that with most of the races anyway.)

Sh*t. Now I'm confused.

I remeber backing Hasty Prince a couple of years ago and was counting my cash as Andreas loomed upsides going well before he'd do his normal thing. I've never been so shocked to see Thornton kick him in the belly and watch him bound up the hill.

I really like Green Belt Elite in this. Still on the up, form solid and with a trainer with a dab hand at campaigning her handicappers well.

I went through the list to see which was the last winner of this that I backed. I'm pretty sure it was Dulwich when he won it for the second time. In case anyone's wondering, I have a bet in every Cheltenham race every year. Anyone fancying Song Of Songs might care to bear this in mind.

I felt similarly robbed, DJ - though moreso because I had finally given up backing the larcenous bastard Andreas, two races before.

Tartak seems interesting to me. If he can return to the formr of last year (which I hope he does! :D ) then he could go very well

Nicanor looks interesting at the weights but I'm just wondering has he run yet from this season? Obviously he was injured last season.

Nicanor's run quite a few times and was beaten by a couple of smart horses then won well last time out.

I think he will improve hugely for the better ground much like he did the year he beat Denman and is probably my main fancy for this if he runs. I also like Copper Bleu and Dave's Dream as well. Winner hasn't carried over 11st for a while so i'd be looking below that mark.

Quite like Cornas, Nomecheki and Green Belt Elite, although I'm not sure about GBE's target as he's entered in 3.
