Think Cool Runnings is a very interesting runner. I will be interested to see what weight he gets. Looks a live outsider to me.

Gal, isn't it Cool Running - ie. singular ? (Watch Gout, the eagle eyed Gareth will pick you up on that).

Seriously though rated 134 (I think) won't he struggle to make the cut? The last two Nationals at least have cut off at 134 and with a bumper entry he may not get in. Surely ante-post bets on him are unwise till he is sure to run?

As for his non-staying. I think he proved his stamina in The Captain Christy, though jumping that day left a lot to be desired. I think with the Strong Gale influence on his dam's side apparently dominant in his preference for top of the ground, his chance also hinges on the going.

At this stage a non-bet I would suggest.

One of the P Nicholls entries, Thisthatandtother, is entered in a Hunter Chase at Fontwell on Sunday (3.40pm).

So, any thoughts on any lively outsiders at this stage? Am already involved with Mr Pointment.

Beef or Salmon, isn't that interesting
I had to check for a moment that the comma was in the right place. You may continue posting.

Forget about anything else already. Ricko is on the winner - Mr Pointment.

I wouldn't be so sure. His current OR of 155 (9lbs higher than his Beecher win) would have given him 11-9 last year, and it'a very long time since a horse managed to win a National with such a big weight, even Hedgehunter at his peak found one too good (with 11-12, OR 156). Also, given Mr Pointment's course form Phil Smith is unlikely to be very lenient with that mark come Tuesday.

He's no doubt got a chance, but I'd be holding fire for the time being.

He won't be too lenient Friggo but personally I'd rather back Bewleys Berry (and did so before his seasonal debut) at twice the price. Plenty of interesting entries though and interesting to see how many are given 11 stone+ - gone are the days of winning from 10lb out of the weights.

Anybody fancy Butlers Cabin? Will be interesting to see how he goes today but maybe this years will be McCoys as last year was for Frankie in the Derby especially after AP's enforced absence.

Snowy Morning would be the one for me.
Don't know if connections are aiming him for the race though.

Thanks Colin, Martin.

As for Bewley's Berry, I'd had my eye on him since last year when I thought he was set to go very close before coming down. However, I think at 144 he's now close to the ceiling of his capabilities and he's now one on my shortlist of many for e/w money.

Blazing Walker, I had Butler's Cabin at the head of my shortlist immediately after the Irish National, but IMO like Bewley's Berry he's been collared off 149. Will be interested to see him run today over a slightly more suitable trip.
Also, looking at Butler's Cabin's form has lead me to an interest in Character Building. Only beaten 3/4l off level weights in the NH Trophy last year and set to receive a stone should he run at Aintree. Untouched for a staying-on 3rd in the Hennessey also. Only problem is his mark (135) was the cut-off last year.

Grand National Trial race about to go off at Punchestown - not sure how many in the list above are entered. I see Freney's Well isn't - tho I quite fancy him for today's race!

Well, AP as chosen Butlers Cabin over the other JP horses so thats a good start.

I'm genuinely shocked if it's true. Butler's Cabin is nowhere near as well handicapped as L'Ami or Kelami or Cool Running (which might struggle to get in). Perhaps AP feels the others simply won't stay or act well over the fences, leaving his hands pretty much tied.

AP definitely rides Butlers Cabin DO.

I generally find the Grand National uninspiring, this year even more so. Always the side show for me at the Aintree meeting which might seem bizarre to some people.

I don't know why but I think the favourite will be beat...just a hunch.

Gal, I feel much the same way about the National vastly over-hyped as far as I am concerned, but I am surprised to hear that you feel that way....I seem to remember you getting very excited about Hedgehunter's jumping one year!
