Firstly all good wishes for Christmas and Health and Prosperity for 2016 to everyone on TH.

Secondly one of my racing friends on Facebook, Catrin Nack in Germany, who some of you may know has posted up an old Christmas Card. I imagine everyone can work out who's who but who would have won this King George ?

Thats not The Fellow, It's See More Business.
Agree that Kauto wins.
Merry Xmas all.

Dessie every time with Kauto in second

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and all the best for the New Year

I'm too young for Dessie(just saying :p)so it's Kauto for me
All the best to everyone, A pleasure as always to frequent this place with you all.

The King of Kempton, Kauto Star

Wise men followed the Star the very first Christmas. Shrewd men followed him at Kempton every other Christmas.

Happy Christmas and a safe, prosperous & healthy 2016 to you all.

Depends on which version turned up - if the Dessie of the 1988 KG and Kauto of the 2009 KG - I have no idea would have been one hell of a race though and Wayward Lad would have been a close third

Try telling young people that Dessie....horses like Captain Christie, Nupsala, The Fellow, Pendil, Arkle, Mill House, Silver Buck and Burrough Hill Lad were absolutely class acts.

You could remove 3 of those without hesitation, replace them and still be leaving out some that deserve to be up there.

As for Arkle? Depends in when you want to run it....had it been in Arkle's (212) day, Kauto Star 191 would have eaten him alive at the weights IMO as it was a handicap way back then

The handicapper is never short of numbers and the 212 is complete nonsense..God on Pegasus couldn't have given 21lbs to Kauto Star and beat him.

Distance aside can anyone imagine any horse giving Sprinter Sacre 20lbs at his best? If you can you are either on drugs or you are wired to the moon.

You can't take the distance aside. That's a bit like saying can anyone imagine any horse giving Dayjur [whatever the max Timeform Rating was for Frankel compared with Dayjur]?

The facts are in the book. Arkle gave genuine Gold Cup contenders* 27-35lbs and beat them by miles.

*The question is, to what horses nowadays do those genuine contenders equate: The Burrough Hill Lads, The See More Businesses and the Denmans or the Giant Bolsters, Sir Rembrandts and Dawn Runs?

At Cheltenham he would have given Dessie 55lbs and beaten him. At Kempton on his best form 20lbs isn't out of the question.

(That's the touch paper well and truly lit...)

Outside of Mill House who you must remember had massive back problems most of his life which Gold Cup contenders did Arkle give 35lbs to and beat out of sight?

I can Remember Stalbridge Colonist beating him Flying Wild doing the same and Bonna Notte would have beaten them both out of sight but for walking through the last fence in that race,

He beat horses like Dormant Brasher Scottish Memories Height of Fashion Freddie but nothing you would rate a Gold Cup horse.

If they were contenders where were they when the greatest Chase on the planet was run.

Snaigow ffs he was a boat.

The Gallacher Gold Cup 17 seconds off the track record..........a record set by Mill House against ferry Boat and 2 monkees who was a 5 mile chaser and all Mill House did was School round.

It still stands today but that is no surprise as there are no Grade 1 Chases run at Sandown over the same distance.

Arkle was brilliant but most of his wins came in Handicaps and I maintain it is much more difficult to beat a horse like Mill House in his prime by 5 lengths than it is to beat a moderate horse giving him 35lbs.

Arkle ended up with a bullshit mark of 212 which was due to the way the handicapping was in those days. The handicapping was a complete mess.

How about this Sire De Grugy beat Far West giving him 2 stone then was beaten 10 lengths himself by Dodging Bullets and 40 lengths by Vibrato Valtat but did the handicapper put them up.......No he put SDG down........In Arkle's day they put Arkle up up up and he raced against boats that were rated on what they had done against other boats.

Saying 55lbs to Desert Orchid is straight out of a Comic book.......Merry Xmas but stay off the port old chap:)
