Happy Retirement Denman

Rumour has it that stable staff had erected a tv in his box for the Betfair Chase. When he saw Kauto's performance he just lay down and shook his head.

Oh what a shame that it ended like that. I was looking forward to seeing the old boy in Ireland at Christmas.

Happy retirement indeed. I think I enjoyed watching him round Newbury as much as Cheltenham. Grand horse.

Fabulous horse. Kauto has always shaded The Tank in my affections, but there would only ever have been a neck in it and I loved roaring on Denman when he wasn't up against Kauto. He's been one of the highlights of racing for the past few years.

Really pleased he has retired in one piece, hope he has a long and happy one and also hope he gets to make plenty of racecourse appearances in retirement. Newbury could do a lot worse than name a race after him.

Real shame he didn;t get one final hurrah because he will go down as one of the greats of the modern era. The 2008 season was definitely his best but the Hennessy the following year was one of the great performances I have seen and a truly memorable afternoon.

I hope he has a wonderful retirement with his mate Kauto once he returns from his final races.

Well done Denman on a great career, congratulations to both Pauls on giving the Sport a real true iconic hero.

He may have been a little bit overated but you can't underestimate the pulling power he gave the sport - emotionally.

A sad but great day.

My abiding memory of Denman will be getting beaten by Nicanor at Cheltenham... I was to the nads in him ante post and could not believe it when I seen Nicanor arriving on the scene...GUTTED. Who would have thought then that the winner that day and the grade one next time out at Punchestown, would only one more success, a 7k chase at Navan. The owners must have cursed their luck with injury.

Bit of a letdown in anticipation of seeing him out again, but heck, I'm equally happy he doesn't risk incurring any injury in doing so. I wonder if he'll go hunting? I can just see him 'tanking' on and on and on - eventually being slowed down after a 20-mile grind. Good news, but we'll miss you, dear boy.

Super horse...his Gold Cup win was like watching Joe Frazier in his prime. Relentless power and savagery!

I'm sure Nicholls is quoted as saying he was going to take Denman out hunting once he and Kauto were retired (The tank being one of the few horses capable of great weight carrying performances!!!!)

:lol::lol:

Thanks (or tanks) for that, Aragorn - it makes sense. I wonder if PN's had a sit on him already? I can see DENMAN thinking, "You must be joking, mate, if you think I'm taking you three miles!" But a day with hounds would be terrific - I can see people turning out just to see him move off. It'd be great if ATR could film that when it happens.

Sorry to see him retired because the Gold Cup won't be the same without him. A brilliant horse on his day and his Hennessy efforts will live long in the memory.

We do badly need a few new GC contenders. I just wonder whether Nicholls realises this and will save Kauto for the big day . . . You take Long Run out and it looks very very winnable indeed.

Disappointed that we dont get to see him run again but glad that he's retired safe!

Im like Cruella, Kauto was always my favourite, but only just. Seeing the 2 of them going round the bend together in the GC this year was amazing. I love it that he is staying in the box next to Kauto for the rest of the season. My favourite Denman performance was the 2009 Hennessy. Just awesome.

Enjoy your retirement! You've earned it

Guys,
Bad news - I've been contacted to say SteveM went into severe shock when he heard the news, and has, at this moment in time, lost the ability to speak, and is heavily sedated in Hammersmith hospital. Doctors are hopeful he will come round, so say a prayer for him - it's been a tough morning for Steve...

Rumours of my demise have been slightly exaggerated.

It had to happen one day. An enormous vacuum stretches before us… others will attempt to fill it and probably fail. I was looking forward to the Lexus and a final crack at the Gold Cup.

If not carried out on his shield, he should (unlike many) be ensured a happy retirement. A celebration of a life rather than remorse at his retirement then...

For now, in the words of Greta Garbo “I want to be alone…”:(

I have work xmas party but drinks beforehand if you want to come along to that venue? Should be closeby. I am not giving you a hug though....

I'll raise a Famous Grouse to him, although The Counting House looks far more fun! Consider yourself hugged, Steve. (Crack! That's at least one rib shot... )

Steve,
Can try and get to Counting House for a quick beer with work buddy at 5.30 before work party if that suits?

I’m in need of one… but admittedly my list of preferred huggers is huge. Kri’s virtual one is appreciated though.
