My gorgeous OH :luv: is taking me to Italy for 5 days only booked it a couple of days ago with Expedia. My Great Grandmother was Italian so it has always been a passion to go to Italy - for that reason as well as the great fashion, the great wines and of course the amazing food! :D (those reasons in no particular order)

It is one of the European countries I have never been to so I am really looking forward to it. We are only going for 5 nights but wondered if anyone has been to this area as any advice, tips etc. would be very much appreciated.

Who's going to keep Brendan's site up to date then? :what:

Sorry can't help with Sorrento, wouldn't want to go there, full of Italians.

Seriously, have a great time.

This has to be another April Fool, Kathy wouldn't dream of leaving the site for more than..............48 hours!

I have been there a couple of times and it is a nice part of the country. I would strongly recommend a trip to Pompeii, going round with a guide. You'll also enjoy very much I'm sure a boat trip along the Amalfi coast, visiting Positano and Amalfi. And only take a boat trip to Capri if you have a head for heights - if you don't like cable cars then you'll miss the bst of the island.

There are a number of places where all of these trips can be booked- and i'm sure that your hotel can arrange them for you.

Almost forgot - when you go to Pompeii you may want to go to Vesuvius. The last bit towards the top is a bit of a climb but easy enough to do. One thing to remember is that even on a hot day it can be quite chilly on the top of the mountain.

I went about 25 years ago as a small child with Ma and Pa but the one thing that has stuck in my mind is Pompeii. Obviously I was far younger then but I seem to remember it was well worth seeing.

Thanks for the tips, Brian/Triptych! :) I'll remember to take my camera and a couple of warm sweatshirts just in case I go up the mountain and to Pompeii .

Colin/Dims, fear not :D I will be taking my PDA with me which should allow me access to Brendan's site and The Racing post etc. The OH has one of those Smart phone jobbies as well, so if all else fails, I may be able to use that. He has just purchased this fold-up Qwerty keyboard that fits into it, which is an absolute god send!

I remember Sorrento as an asttractive town (over 30 years ago), and Pompeii is certainly worth a visit.

I was having a week's holiday at Capri, another place to spend a day, less than 30 minutes on the hydrofoil.

Whatever you do, do not, under any circumstances, be tempted to go to Napoli..............its a thorough sh*it-hole.

Don't forget to take a boat trip out to the Blue Grotto off Capri - you have to duck your heads as you are whisked inside, and then it's magical. Okay, it's dead touristy, but it's still a beautiful natural feature.

Oh, dear, grasshopper - I remember going through it with my parents many, many moons ago, and it was very grubby then. Not as bad as in the old days when its streets flowed with open sewage, giving rise to all kinds of plagues carrying off the Neapolitans, but sadly very disappointing. Sad to think it's not been improved. The Bay of Naples, though, is a lovely picturesque sight itself.

I went a couple of years ago and loved it. I can echo what Brian said except for Pompeii....full of old buildings just like Bootle after the war :D

But a smaller brothel

I agree completely with Grasshopper about Napoli. Sorrento and Pompeii I recommend as well as swimming out to the blue grotto just off the coast of Capri. Just don't look in the water...

Thanks everyone!

I've been looking on the internet now, and after reading what some of you have added on this thread and it does sound as if there will be plenty to see and do. I am really looking forward to going.

You can get yourself in the mood by having regular sing-a-longs to 'The Beautiful Isle of Capri' and 'Come Back to Sorrento', Kathy!

"Come back to SOHHH-rennn-TOHHHH...
Or I must die!" cry

Literally, I am just back, catching up with all my e-mails, post etc and then I can hopefully post up a few photos of my few wonderful days away.

Where would you like me to stick them, Ardross? shrug:: :D

Put them here, Kathy, and Ardross can move them about after we've seen them. Into the 'Holiday Snaps Here' section...

Just a few photos of some of the views! I have to go and watch Chelsea (just equalised) now so possibly more later.... :)

Second one up looks a little like Durdle Door - you sure you didint just pop to Dorset??!!

Seriously though - looks stunning - hope you had a great time!!

Dorset, Trudi? :suspect: Nah, I definitely caught a plane from Gatwick! :D Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi coast were were fabulous. As it was Easter they had lots of parades, some of them very sombre but there was absolutely no trouble even though there were literally hundreds and thousands of people out on the streets. Whole families with their young children and their grannies all enjoyng the atmosphere. The refreshing thing for me was there were NO drunks even though all the youngsters were out enjoying themselves. They clearly do binge drink in parts of Italy but I saw nothing but well behaved youngsters enjoying Easter with their families. So refreshing. The food, as you can probably imagine was fantastic, especially if you like olives, massive lemons and fresh fish!

We went to Pompeii An and that was a trip I also thoroughly enjoyed. It was very educational and we had a fantastic Italian guide who took us all around the site. He spoke perfect English and was obsessed with the Roman's and their obsession with sex. :luv:

By the way, my OH hired a car for the day. He drives in most countries when we are on holiday and he was happy to take up the challenge of driving in Sorrento and up the Amalfi coast. That was some experience. The Italians are the craziest drivers I have ever seen.

On the journey from the airport to the hotel our taxi driver was nearly arrested for dangerous driving. In a tunnel he overtook a coach when there was another coach coming the other way. We missed the oncoming coach by literally inches. Little did the taxi driver know, but there was a police car behind him. He received an on the spot fine and 5 points on his licence.

Triptych, I'll do my best to post more photos later.
