The Peter Marsh Chase is a Grade Two race run over 3m that is staged at Haydock Park racecourse.

First run in 1981 the contest is sometimes billed as another Grand National trial, but we’ve yet to see a winner of this race land the Aintree marathon in the same season, although the 1995 winner, Earth Summit, did go onto win the Grand National 3 years later.

The 2020 Peter Marsh Chase was won by the Sue Smith-trained Vintage Clouds - the Sue Smith yard have won 5 of the last 17 runnings.

Here we take a look back at recent winners and gives you the main stats to look out for ahead of the 2021 renewal – this year run on Saturday January 23rd.

Gold cup would be a huge step. Paul Kealy's recommendation to have something on NRNB seemed the clever play before the race.
Youd wonder if connections are keeping him and Monkfish apart. Would be a very interesting match.
Also, Cap du Nord really ran into one at Kempton.
 
I like him a lot but he’ll have no chance in a Gold Cup.

Something like a Native River or Frodon will take him off his feet unless it’s bottomless and even then, while his jumping improved today, his two closest rivals in terms of SP fell or unseated

This is just a silly take.
 
It would worry me that his form is on sharp tracks, or over shorter trips. Not the best CV for a slog round Chelters

He wouldn't need to worry about being taken off his feet. The only reason he raced prominently yesterday was because they weren't going fast enough for him, according to Scu, and the horse carted him there. At Kempton the time before I thought I'd done my dough seeing how far back he was at one point, with his jumping noticeably sketchy. There was none of that yesterday.

In any event, yesterday evening I laid off the win portion of my 50/1 bet (56+/1, actually, with Hills's boost) between 10/1 and 11/1 at Betfair so I can enjoy the race, should he turn up, and hope for a nice return at no risk. There's no place-only option yet but I would expect to be able to lay the pace portion off at about 6/4 when it happens.

I don't think I or Maruco or any other people who were impressed either at Kempton or yesterday have suggested he will win the race; just that he's now a possible contender.

Would I back him at the best price of 12/1 yesterday evening? I don't think so. I'd rather wait until the day and see what else turns up. I'd rather takes 8s then if so inclined.

Listening to Joe Chambers (Ricci's racing manager) this morning I also got the impression that it will definitely be the Gold Cup - more or less entirely ruled out the RSA pointing out that the Ricci's have had 68 festival runners in 67 different races so they don't like to take each other on and avoid it where possible. Venetia yesterday when interviewed as well was giddy, but was reluctant to commit to anything before talking to the Ricci's. it's one thing to say wait another year but considering the problems the horse has had you must surely strike while the iron is hot and lets be honest its not exactly a vintage Gold Cup. Coneygree is the perfect example of both striking while the iron is hot and also the perils of waiting until the next season, he never made it back to the festival again.

From my own perspective, financially I hope he goes for the four miler (Sorry Galvin backers) but as a racing fan I really hope he rocks up in the big one, and if he does he will take beating I think, especially if he jumps like he did yesterday.

This is pretty much where I am with him too, although I do have a handy looking Galvin ticket at 25/1 so it's swings and roundabouts. I've had a decent each way bet on Royale Pagaille for the Gold Cup nrnb now too. He's every chance of placing, so I'll probably lay off most of the win part of the bet.

Are you thinking of a different horse perhaps?

Royal Pagaille was purchased by Venetia from France for the Ricci's - the story goes they were sitting beside each other at the races and Rich Ricci said to her that if she ever seen a horse that she really liked to buy if for them.
 
NH Chase is a million, Gold Cup all the way unless Irish horses can't make it, only then would RSA come into it.

Remember Willie calls the shots with ALL of Ricci's!
