Phoned up for the results of a blood-test yesterday.

I was half-expecting high blood-sugar and high cholesterol figures but even though the sugar figure was only just below the upper limit, I was told that my cholesterol was below the lower limit (3.3 where the lower limit is 3.4).

I have been asked to attend the 'lifestyle' clinic.

I more than a little surprised by the fact that low cholesterol is regarded as a problem.

I would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me.

TIA

Colin

I know one person with low Cholesterol, which is due to an overactive thyroid, and is no big deal. There are a range of things with varying seriousness, that can cause it, the Thyroid thing is the most usual, I think.

The research that has been done on low cholesterol has indicated there may be some health problems when your cholesterol gets too low. Both men and women with low cholesterol have been shown to be at increased risk for anxiety, mood disorders, depression, stroke and violence. People with low cholesterol also have an overall death rate higher than those with normal cholesterol levels.

Those with low cholesterol are not at increased risk for cardiovascular diseases, but their overall risk for depression, mood swings, cancer, hemorrhagic stroke, respiratory diseases, and suicide increases. No one seems to know why for sure but there is some evidence that having very low cholesterol alters the way brain cells function, affecting mood stabilizing brain chemicals. That may explain the increase in anxiety and depression.

From googling it looks like it is unusual for men to get overactive thyroids anyway. If you have sufficient hypercondriacistic tendancies you seem to have a van load of different diseases you could attribute to yourself.

... and the uncharacteristic outburst on the Six Nations thread. Or maybe that was just a result of watching the orangeman playing for Wales.

That explains a few of my posts lately then, Brian!! :D

When I went to see the doctor in December my cholesterol was just above the limit, a limit which had just been lowered.
The doctor had put me on medication to reduce the cholesterol and then asked me to have a blood-test in February to give the medication a chance to have an effect.

As am I already taking SEROXAT for depression and anxiety, this is all becoming a little confusing.

Errrmmm.... Seroxat.... I guess you didn't see a documentary on it last year, Colin? Several depressed/anxious patients committed suicide shortly after being prescribed the drug. :(

I'd be a wee bit concerned that it isn't perhaps meeting your needs, or that the combination with the cholesterol drug might not be gelling too well. Were you put on statins? Ask your doctor how they interact with Seroxat, and tell him about the dire documentary where within as little as 6 weeks of using it, the mildly depressed threw themselves into the sea, hung themselves, etc. It was depressing enough just watching the programme!

Blimey! No chance of you chucking yourself out of the window tonight, then! (She said, in a sensitive and caring kinda way...) :)
