Oh, God knows what's gone wrong NOW!! Out of the blue, AVG wanted to reinstall itself on my Taskbar (said okay) and it seems now I can't access any of my Desktop Icons (which includes TH for easy access). I have to go to Start, find Programs, then Internet Explorer, crap, crap, crap!

I don't know if Google is fighting with AVG, or Virgin has assumed command of the whole computer, or what. All I want to be able to do is to get the things I use the most back as active Desktop items. I went into Programs and found that everything had gone onto Custom status. I changed them back to Outlook Express for e-mail, Microsoft for IE, etc. but they have changed themselves back to Custom with 'use my regular e-mail server' etc.

I've only just got through the trauma of installing a new phone which needs to be answered in a different way from the old one. What the hell the computer's now allowed to happen, I've got NO idea!

Any techie help will be most gratefully received. Thank you!

Yours
Demented & Despairing

Do a system restore as your first point of call. Choose a point of about a week ago and it should sort things out for you.

Oh, yes, good old System Restore. I tried other things but to no avail, so I'll give it a bash. If not sighted for a month, I'm holding you to task, Miz Jinny! (See, there are huge benefits to others with your present recuperative period - you're available all day long!) :D

Can you tell I've too much time on my hands? I am allowed out for a little walk every day mind! The horse is very confused and I have to bribe him with apples for not riding him.

I'd be going stir crazy if I were you, j/j! All that activity every day, and then zip. BTW, thanks for that - it looks like things are okay again. What happened was (I remember now as it popped up again following the Restore) the AVG Anti-Virus said it had an upgrade to install. I ran the Install and that seems to be when it deformed various settings and shoved itself up onto the Taskbar, assuming supreme command. It is not now on the Taskbar and I can't see a good reason for it to be there. That's much better - cheers!

You been spying on me?

I might give that a try, Col, when I've recovered from the latest round of eye-boggling anxiety! So much for the three weighty tomes I've got on 'how to' - the troubleshooting page is just that, one page, when in reality the troubles are endless!

I use Microsoft security Essentials as my anti virus

a guy at work who knows a bit about computers doesn't use Anti virus at all..he just uses a firewall and anti malware..basically if you open something you shouldn't you will get infected

i don't know if thats true or not by the way

is all the anti virus stuff cobblers..playing on our fears etc?

i got a virus not long ago..I had AVG on at that point and i clicked on a site i use often..it wasn't porn by the way:)..and it brought the box up as though it was PDF file..I was tired and automatically clicked on it..within about 60 seconds my whole computer was frozen up...i couldn't access anything..and i mean anything

luckily all my stuff is on external hard drives so I just went in from the starting up process and recovered my drive..wiped the lot off the internal drive...i can't be arsed with removing shit like that..bit by bit...would rather clear it all off..took me a few hours to get my stuff all as it was..but easier..for me... than following a list of instructions for clearing it.

so..even with AVG..due to my own carelessness..i got infected

I used to run AVG but it got all arsey with my other programs so got rid of it and now switched to Kaspersky which is less intrusive.

Never ever on any account could you pay me to use Norton or McAfee!!

I've been very pleased with the AVG, using it after Gal recommended it. I don't think I pressed any wrong buttons after it asked if I wanted to upgrade it, but it also asked to go back onto the Taskbar (where it had sat quite peacefully before), and the troubles started, it seemed, after I granted it the two wishes. I will go through the same stuff if it comes back again and see if the same prob occurs - at least, thanks to our home-bound invalid, I know how to change it all back again!
