Hi
We are retiring a 8 year old sprinter, but so far have been unable to find him a good home via normal channels - can anyone help?

He is gelded, but having had suspensory problems is unlikely to be suitable for any form of jumping, gentle trots or canters should be fine.

We do require a non racing agreement to be signed, but other than transport costs if not collected, he will be free to a good home.

Anyone interested or able to help?

Put an advert on source an ex racehorse, that's the best way. I've rehomed 3 in the past year this way. It's only £10 to put up an advert as well.

Loads: Retraining of Racehorses, Moorcroft Rehab & Retraining, HEROS, an ad in Horse & Hound, an ad in Horsemart, an ad in the Racing Post's classified section (after all, he could be used as a companion or trainer's hack), email as many trainers as you can from Horses in Training (offering him as a free hack for them or their staff), contact Hurlingham, Cowdray Park and assorted Polo Clubs if you think his size (preferably around 15.1-15.2) and his leg will take the work, look in your Yellow Pages to find riding schools and ask for their help (many to be found listed under British Horse Society links - and the BHS would probably try to help you, too), check your Yellow Pages for equine vet services who'll have local contacts with polo, dressage, showjumping and eventer owners; look for equestrian centres in your area which take horses at livery (they may have people looking for another or replacement horse); even email some racecourses where he's raced and let them know he's available - lots of racecourse staff ride ex-racers. Ask to put up a 'Home Wanted' flyer in their offices, plus any local tack shops/feed stores, etc. You might also ask your trainer to ask the farrier if he knows of anyone looking for a hack - there's a considerable grapevine of contacts to be had there.

You could do very well with Horsemart (a free local mag). You send them details of the horse (age, height, sex, colour, breed, price, location, and your tel no.) and £30 buys you an ad with photo. Call the team on 01646 680755 and speak to Lucy or Emma, who, it says, will be happy to help.

8 is older than most of us will take on, and they need to be sound. I'd rule this road out and put a free to good home advert on Horsemart/HorseQuest

Oh, yes, hadn't thought about his age, Miesque. PLACE THE DUCHESS was okay as 5, but wasn't thinking of his age. Good point.

If he has had suspensory problems and you feel he is not sound enough to do much work then you must make this clear in a advert. Likewise I doubt he would be much use as a trainers hack as they do tend to get plenty of work and not much tlc!

Try this site: http://www.sourceanexracehorse.co.uk/

If you go donw the route of some of the rehoming centres be aware that certain ones DO charge you quite a substantial amount to take the horse off your hands!! And then they sell them on at quite a price too!
Also some of the rehoming centres are a darn site better than others.
Di Arbuthnot may be worth contacting - she is a great campaigner for retired racehorses:

Best of luck - had he been sound and ok to hunt/jump, I would have been able to help as I have a friend who is looking.

How bad was the suspensory problem, FF? What's your vet's opinion of the type of work he can take? You might want to say he's been okayed for trot and canter work, but not to undertake flat-out galloping or jumping. Might also be a point to make about him being fine to shoe, box, clip and be in a field with other horses (if he is, of course).
