I very, very rarely bet ante post but made an exception in the case of Apple Away in the Hennessey. Now I see she isn't running.

I swear I shall never bet ante post again - ever.

Back to the drawing board.

Who fancies what?

Feel for you especially as the syndicate that owns her were adamant this was the target.

I very rarely get involved in AP markets nowadays apart from the Festival although my activity there is much less than it was as value is very hard to come by now. Also had a bad run of injuries this year

I was very strongly of the opinion that AA was being shrewdly trained for this race but resisted going in ante-post so relief on my part is tinged with sympathy for your losing bet, yorick.

That's bad luck Yorick and I sympathise and like DO I was going to back it as well but hadnt got to it.

I was prompted to check out the decs and have now taken a nibble at Général En Chef at 16/1 (4 places).

There's always the chance they'll decide against bringing it over from France but his French rating translates to 162 while it's off 148 on Saturday. and there's no way I wouldn't back it if it did come over.

Were they?

I tell you, I'm perplexed. When they didn't enter her into any of the Cheltenham handicaps, I couldn't blieve it. The only reason, I thought, was that they had a big target for this season in their sights.

He's been declared at Market Rasen on Wednesday.

Also entered in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle on Saturday.

Gotta love a fellow pedant.

The French horse was third in the 3m6f Grand Steeplechase de Paris to the recent Prix Jousselin first and second, has the speed to win over 2m3f and cooks a mean Tournedos Rossini which, for a horse, has to be impressive.

There is a slight chance part of that last sentence isn't entirely true but, even so, the man who annoyingly lives closer to a deep fried mars bar than I do, might just have identified "le snip de handicap" (let's parlez franglais).

Where is Euro?

He's been a bit quiet the past few days.

Wasn't he touting Colonel Harry up for this after it's last run?

Ha ha, not really I actually thought PP but Jamie mentioned this instead and after Datsalrightgino last year whom I backed APost for the PP but didn't for this I wasn't going through that again so yeah I'm on him. It's not a great renewal is it and I don't really see a lot of dangers if he runs to form - the De Bromhead horse for sure and the way hers are winning Venetia's.

Remastered looks big at 40s. Twice ran well in the race. May even had won it 3 years ago, till departing 4 out.
Lost his way for a spell, but his 2 runs this season suggest, he may have rediscovered some form.
Fingers slightly burnt with Cloudy Glen, not entered, so I'll wait till Thurs.

🤣

I don't see an official UK rating for Il Est Francais but his French rating is only 5lbs higher than GEC, which would put IEF in the Hennessy off 11-11 and getting weight from Nassalam (OR 156) the wonder horse.

Timeform aren't committing to a rating for IEF but they tipped him ante-post for the KG and called him "right out of the top drawer". If GEC is only 5lbs inferior - a tenuous acceptance of the rating differential - then 16/1 does look a tad generous.

If he runs...

With two Grade 1 Chases a week before it nowadays, it's a different contest from the days of Arkle, Burrough Hill Lad and even Denman.
I get it but not every renewal had those types in it. For every Denman you might get tho or three What's up Boys or Be My Royal(d).

It's like on Twitter a fortnight back I saw two or three people moaning about the small field Haldon Gold Cup - I had to point out that Barnbrook Again won a renewal in 1988 with three opponents. A lot of this negativity is nostalgia rather than reality based.

The Haldon is often a small-field race but it's also often still very good form.

Was it always a handicap, by the way?

Leaving pedantry aside you’d have expected a better performance from her at Market Rasen if she’d been going to be a genuine Hennessy contender. She might have been suited by the extra 2f as rallying at the end but still beaten a long way
