Hennessey/ Coral Gold Cup

Leaving pedantry aside you’d have expected a better performance from her at Market Rasen if she’d been going to be a genuine Hennessy contender. She might have been suited by the extra 2f as rallying at the end but still beaten a long way
She didn't need to win off that mark so it was satisfactory.

I was prompted to check out the decs and have now taken a nibble at Général En Chef at 16/1 (4 places).

There's always the chance they'll decide against bringing it over from France but his French rating translates to 162 while it's off 148 on Saturday. and there's no way I wouldn't back it if it did come over.

Well, it does indeed come over.

Or at least it is declared at the final stage and with a jockey booked.

As long as I get a run for my money...

I actually half-expected Harry to pick Midnight River [after studying the form] so I'm now wondering if the National is the big target. Currently rated 151, it wouldn't be too difficult to manoeuvre it down to 148 to get in near the bottom of the weights.

GDL is currently on 144 so probably needs to go up close to 4lbs if they plan on taking her to Aintree although I'm not sure she stayed last year.

Welsh national was supposed to have been the main target and not going to Aintree according to a stable tour I read.

I wondered if anyone can help.
Do William Hill still do epic odds on horse racing.
It's not appearing on my promotions and I wondered if it's just me or have they stopped offering it.
Thanks in advance.

I haven't looked this week but it wasn't there last Saturday.

Agree with Mo on this one, originally I said its a shit renewal but maybe a superstar arises out of it. Remember Teeton mill was rated 139 when he won and went on to romp home in a King george there are only 2 horses in this years race with that rating or lower.

I've done my figures but haven't tabulated them yet.

For every handicap I 'do' I have a rating target that an average winner should at least hit.

For this renewal, of the 15 declared I reckon 13 have the potential to surpass that mark.

That's not to say they all will but I'd be disappointed if three or four didn't.

Teeton Mill I remember well. He was unusual in that he was hacking up in hunter chases as a youngish horse so his ceiling was unknown but for all that the likes of Arkle and Burrough Hill Lad won this impressively the one that sticks in my mind al these years later is Galway Blaze. I've put the Youtube video up before. If you haven't seen it, check it out.

There's also been a few that didn't complete in the big 3m novice chases at Cheltenham or Aintree and get in off their novice marks when they were always likely to be a good 10lbs better than that. Ever Blessed springs to mind as one example.

The downside of a modern Hennessy, though, is that it can be attritional for younger horses and they sometimes don't come back.

Could win. I hate this race honestly. I was on Smad Place the year before he won it and same with Remastered the year he fell.

I've always liked the race, but even though I have always thought Newbury is a course than looks a lot better on TV than it is if you're actually there (it's been just up the road from me ever since I moved to Hampshire in 2002).

April Seventh is the first horse I remember seeing win it - small field that year IIRC.

Fascinating market now. I think the short-term ante-post one was ok but now you have support coming for the usual suspects (Pumpkin, Skelcunt and Venetia) with horses who don't justify those odds. I'm going in again on Harry.

Love the race, run in a flat, wide, and fair track. it's been good to me in the past.
Also bet Harry's wuth an ew on Lee's

I love the race too Reet. Memories of many fabulous races but Arkle, Burrough Hill Lad & especially Denman stand out. Nothing like those today but who even needs to bet in a race like this? FWIW I'll yet again be following O with a small interest on GDL. GL all & enjoy.

I've gone in heavyish on the Mullins horse. It’s effectively a first-season novice and they appear to have bagged it loads of experience in a short time. It was ridden over-confidently when the only one to get near Flooring Porter in the Kerry National and that form is working out. There doesn't appear to be a lot of market confidence in it but I'm not too worried about that.

With the form Venetia’s in I couldn’t resist an interest in Victtorino to add to my earlier bet on Galia des Litaux. First time out may be thebest time to catch the former as he showed when running away with a good handicap at Ascot last year. He’s only 1lb higher today than when following up again at Ascot

Head above the parapet. These are my figures for the race but, as I said earlier, any of the second-season novices could win. The Best Odds column is as was yesterday when I did the table.

Astonished that this fella placed after looking like he was going to be pulled up. Ground a bit too fast for GDL

It's that man Paul Nichols yet again. Denman and Kauto may be home but he still seems wel capable of getting more of his fair share of big winner.
