... when racing's on? With a day like yesterday and today at Chelters, we often like to fire off a quick note of congrats or commizz to forumites whose selections have just run, or just comment. Is it better to leave one's pc running on screensaver during this time, or switch the machine on and off? I know one or two of you fanatics leave the pc up the whole day, but I'm probably only thinking of when there are really interesting meetings.

Perfect option would be to use hibernate/sleep mode if it has got one - this will save a lot of power, but will mean that it will awaken in just seconds. Look for a button that looks like a half-moon.

Not that many years ago it was ill-advised to power-off/power-on PCs repeatedly as it could shorten component-life. I am not sure that is really an issue these days as manufacturing standards have increased.

I suppose it really boils down to if you have the patience to wait for it to boot up every time you need it. Personally I leave mine on for days...

Oh, cheers, bets - yes, it DOES have a half-moon button, and now I know what it's for! Next time we have unbearably exciting racing I can let it snooze, watch the telly, then come back onsite and see what the word is. Brilliant - gracias.

My laptop goes into hibernation after it has been left alone for a while. Which may well be a major contribution to the battle against global warming as the old PC was left on all day.

Wheres teh half moon button likely to be? I cant see one....
Near the on switch? Or on the top/side of the keyboard. Not all have them...

I now know several people who, like me, are daily pestered by encoded stocks and shares messages which we haven't solicited and don't want. As the e-mail addresses are switched all the time and then disabled, it's impossible to just keep blocking them, as they're always changing. Is there ANYTHING I can use to kill them before they download, please? BrianH says they're encoded so as to not be recognized as anti-Spam messages. They're getting through my Spam filter, so they're working well, damn them. Any ideas gladly received!

I'm interested in Prt Scr/SysRq, myself. I haven't the nerve to press half the keys on my board, either, Troods. I've bought three self-tuition manuals and not used any of them yet, so I'm still limited to just e-mail and Internet use. I'm amazed at what my pc can do if I so request it. It'll play DVDs for me, apparently. Marvellous.
