I'm looking to buy a new hi-fi system, probably micro or small mini. Medium quality and price range. I haven't looked at this market for many years so can anyone recommend anything? Also news on what to avoid would be useful.

Denon micro systems are very highly rated by the hi fi mags and well made . One of their well liked systems is about £350 I think .

Personally, I think you'll have to go a long, long way to beat Technics. Their sound quality is second to none and even their micro or mini systems have incredible acoustics and are pretty smart aesthetically, too. I'm pretty sure you can pick up a decent Technics micro/mini system for between £200-£300. My hifi is Technics, it's fantastic - my pride & joy and is still a very decent system although it's now over 3 years old.

Ah - it is a little known fact but wot I used to work in the hi-fi industry for several years!!

& the bloke formerly known as my husband is a real techie freak on this subject and would definitely recommend you take a look at the ONKYO compact systems - I've two in the house and the sound quality is amazing.

"the bloke formerly known as my husband".....very good!!

"the bloke formerly known as my Dad", (yes, I know he still is my Dad, although he likes to try and forget it by poncing about with some tart my age) works in the hi-fi industry too, so one thing I have been able to do since I was about 8 is to wire up a hi-fi - essential learning for a young child, I feel. :D

Well, we're not divorced - neither of us particularly feels the need to be and the only beneficiaries would be our solicitors - but we are legally separated, so it's very difficult to know what to call one another (it's amicable, so b*tch or b@stard aren't necessary..)!

I was going to tape some records onto a cassette, but I got the wires
backwards. When I returned them to my friend, he said, "Hey, these records are all blank"

Fair play to you Jules, good idea. When my parents got divorced it was horrendously messy; stupidly the actual split wasn't as they wanted to do it amicably and spare myself & my brother from as much grief as possible (even though Mum was being torn apart by it all). It was once the settlements were being handled that everything got very ugly - no matter what anyone says, I'd say there are very few amicable divorces as it is once the money gets divided up that the battles tend to break out, we are all human.

Been there done that..... paid out big bucks too, to solicitors.... have not got a young tart either !! but most divorces end up as being very acrimonious when the family heirlooms?? need to be divided up…. amongst other things as well…………

Yes unfortunately its the kids who suffer in the end.............

I personally have a AIWA set up but a bit dated now but still very good sound comes out of it but then without being egoistic I term myself has being a bit of specialist in electronics etc and have been doing it has an hobby for yonks now having served my time!!!! in the industry (service industry in electrics)

Thanks for the responses so far. Perhaps I should add that I've had a Technics system for about 14 years now. Very reliable and good sound. Just need something slightly smaller in my new living room.

Don't go too far downmarket archie . I bought a cheap Sony for my flat in manc and it is crap

I recently bought a dvd/surround system 500w and apart from superb TV and DVD sound I also play my cd's on there. Far better than any hi fi system Ive ever had.

My hi-fi is also a DVD/CD system with cinema surround sound & it is fantastic. The sound quality for both watching DVD's or listening to music is superb - the cinema surround sound is very, very good also.

I would recommend getting seperates as they offer a superior sound to any micro/mini system.
The budget kind....£100 each for a CD player,Amp and speakers as well as £40 for decent speaker cable and inter-connects offers good value and great sound.
Best makes imo are Cambridge Audio,Nad and Marantz for the amp and player.Wharfedale and Mission for speakers

I bought a TOP OF THE RANGE !!! PANASONIC DVD recorder 80GBTS HARD DISK(now you can get 180 gbts too B) ) a year ago now, it cost me £750 its linked to my CCTV system and to my AIWA amp system, so plays my c/d's and having two large speakers on the wall and surround speakers too emanates a brilliant sound...
AND CAN COMBAT MY NOISY NEIGHBOURS TOO  :P
