With all the talk of horses on here how many of you have actually ridden a horse? I'm nursing a dodgy neck and sore back at the moment after a bit of a crash landing from one on Monday but I know that a love of horse racing doesn't always go with even a liking of horses. My other half for instance, likes his racing and admires them from afar but is more than a little bit scared of them, and has to have at least a parade ring fence between him and one of them. He hasn't even so much as sat on a donkey.

Love heading out cross country but alas not ridden near as much as I used too, been a few months since I have ridden a horse.....love the animal.

Lessons when I was a kid, my instructor told me I rode like I thought I was John Wayne. It was back to football shortly after that.

I used to own my own horse in 2004, but had to give her back because simply I didn't have the time that I would have liked to put into her.

It's great, horse riding, I'd love to do it, but I snapped several ligaments in my neck later after getting rid of my mare, and have been advised not to ride again, as its not worth the risk.

I definitely suggest it.

My parents were cruel and wicked and refused to let me have lessons when I was younger for fear of me becomming a jockey! :o I'd always wanted to learn though and my ex-boyfriend and I started to have riding lessons every week together. He was much better at it than I was  Then I got togther with Mr Grumpy Griffin and he wouldn't let me carry on having lessons with my ex

Iv'e been on one or two!
  bet you have JinnyJ probably daily too..... I rode when 14yrs of age, old Welsh cob with a bit of rope as a bridle/reins BARE BACK (the horse not me mind  )but horse would fold if I got on one now!!!!!!! a big lad?? :D

Oh sorry we had (a gang of my mates) the WELSH DONKEY DERBY ON BLACKPOOL SANDS on the SAT after being on the piss all Friday night.... :o I spent most of the time on the floor through laughing at us all falling off, that was when I was about 19... :D

I've had about half a dozen lessons and was told I was a natural (or was that the flying lessons?) until it got to the bit where the horse started moving quicker. I'm pleased to say I never fell off once :D

I havn't been on a horse in 5 years but if I get my driving test that's gonna change for sure . I was on horseback from when I was a tot and really miss it . Showjumping mainly but hunting in the winter . It's a good point though because alot of racing commentators don't have any practical experience . I feel a poll coming on :D

All sorts since age 9, owned six, one or two at a time. Last ride was probably in 1997, hacking on an aged but agile hunter mare, but IF I get slim and fit again, I'll definitely have another go! I realize how desperately out of condition I am when I remember the muscle groups (a distant memory at present) involved in staying on some grand efforts to decant me! Some of the best times have been on horseback, and certainly many great pals made through horses.

I have been horseriding since I was 7 years old. Carried on as long as I could but work kept getting in the way. My Dad had 3 livery yards whilst i was growing up, so there was always something to ride when I wasn't working.

The good news is, now I have taken my own TB out of training I am back in the saddle again.... and I love it. My friend and I took two horses through Windsor Great Park a few weeks ago and it reminded me how much I loved being on horseback.

Nearly every holiday I have been on, I always try and make sure there is a riding school nearby so that for at least one day of my holiday I can go out on a horse - my boyfriend joined me once, but it was not the most pleasurable experience for either of them.

I am able to work part time very soon, and the whole reason for this is to get back amongst horses in one way or another.

Rode regularly until about 12 years ago, when a chronic back problem put paid to it, although I have ridden once or twice since - memorably in the Rockies in Idaho!

I have been toying with the idea of sending Doris (aka REACH THE WIND) off to Lucy & Rod Farrant to see if she would be OK to ride but I'm not sure right now just how I'd find the time to ride out regularly, especially with winter coming up.

Also not quite sure how bomb-proof Doris would be though - she may be 17 but I have a sneaking suspicion she'd see lions and bears lurking everywhere round here....

To paraphrase jinnyj - I've ridden a few!! Ridden a few, owned a few, jumped a few, competed a few, trained a few, raced a few.....still ride regularly too.

Jools - yes, wait 'til you're trotting along blissfully, and that red deer comes boinging out over the hedge, or Hattie puts up a couple of squawking pheasants! :D

Have ridden since I was little but not much lately (past 3 or so years) due to uni etc.

I did tell my riding instructor that i wanted to be a jockey (at 15yo and 6ft tall) but she told me I should be a rodeo rider instead

Did get in to Equine College/University but decided on A-levels instead as is a more open path with regards a career.

Ma and Pa couldn't afford it when I was little so started very late, very nervous, worried about hurting my back, not very good but loved it, got chucked head first in the middle of Windsor Great Park, landed on my head, very sore neck, shoulders, back, hand, leg - took a while to get over it then moved, no money, moved again, no money, no money, now would love to but would want some lessons again to get some confidence back (what little I had in the first place).

Barring racehorses, i've ridden since i was about 5, early teenage years were spent doing all sorts of pony club eventing until I caught the racing bug. In between jobs i spent a short time (very short!!!) as Karen Dixon's groom, after which i decided I wouldnt be doing that again!

Have an Appaloosa 3/4yo who was broken in earlier this year. He was going really well until he started to grow and i took the decision to turn him out till next year unless someone wants to buy him as i'm looking for something a bit older and steadier to lead a pony off and do a bit of RC activities on, not to mention put up with my bad habits that i've learnt riding TB's!!

Ridden since I was about 5, left school, did my Advanced Instructors exam (passed) mum and me had a livery/teaching yard for a good few years, broke and schooled then mainly did dressage with my own horses.

Now ........ no horses (boy do I miss it) two babies and being a sensible mum. Thinking of having a mid life crisis and buying a horse again at some point, just dont have the handy fields and stables on my doorstep.

I was a very lucky kid in that not only did I get to ride at a good stable despite the family being a bit broke, I also got to keep ponies rent free at a relative's farm at one point.

Most of them were mental but, hey..

Great memories. One involved an Emu.... :-)

One involved an Emu.... :-)
My memories of an Emu include a pink windmill and a mad old bat with a green face.

My career as a jockey started and ended one summers day at a Pontins holiday camp when aged eight I took part in the Donkey Derby. I was confident of a debut success, my mount had been punted heavily on the exchanges and at flag fall.......the bugger refused to race. Undaunted, and in true Tony McCoy/Deano's Beeno style, I thrashed the beast to within an inch of his life but the stubborn old sod still refused to move and I eventually departed the scene in tears.

Twenty years on and as far as I can recall I have not sat on another horse/donkey/pony since.
