Hurry up and move!!
I’m a big fan of anything only being worth what someone is willing to pay for it ( regardless of what the seller would like that to be) but for the life of me I can’t get my head around this. $2,000,000 au is around the million pound mark - and while he could easily win most of it back if he had a good year or two with how good the prize money is compared to anywhere else it still seems nuts to me. Presumably Gai is thinking about a dual campaign for him and trying to take in the bigger jumps races as well as prepping for autumn.

Who’s got others that have made them wonder….

Gai took Fiorente some time back to win the Cup, maybe the thoughts are to try and replicate (well, you'd guess they almost certainly are). Add one or two others and it's recouped. But could be it's just the glory and money is kind of secondary.

Interesting to see if our Breathless Spirit is offered for syndicate over yonder.
Bought for 70k at Newmarket October he is to be trained by Archie Alexander.
His likes are sold to shareholders with an overall budget of 700,000 or so to cover transport, quarantine , training and associated racing fees.
At that budget Vauban is possibly cheap by comparison but good luck to anyone trying to improve a WPM resident !
Consider also that his 2 trips to Oz have cost north of 500k so from Rich's point of view the horse is just about covering himself, unlikely to win the equivalent over here.
One of our Whitegrass friends was very put out when, after a Sun Alliance chase with a Ricci runner finishing fourth to Don Poli, Rich was overheard asking his manager " What is fourth prize worth ?"
The answer, unheard probably was it paid the horse's expenses that week.

Quite possibly - they do love a syndicate and it works brilliantly.

7 year old gelding Vauban who’s not loved the stay either time he’s done it just made me 🤨 a bit - but maybe with staying rather than shuttling he’ll be better, and he’ll get used to the ground ( soft there is nowhere near our good to soft even !) and the heat better - it’s not like Gai isn’t master of her craft. And she’s dual licence, so a tilt at the Grand Annual and the National wouldn’t be out of the question I guess.
I hope they do really well with him, at the end of the day they aren’t going to be tiptoeing around the country meetings whatever else they do!

There we go - it’s a syndicate, RR has kept a share, he wasn’t $2m and there are shares available 😁 makes more sense now it’s confirmed. Apart from her thinking she can make him faster - that will be something to see…
( but away from Werribee for training will make a difference I reckon)

Is there any news on Breathless Spirit? Sold to an Australian buyer. I just want to keep up to date with his progress. He was showing so much promise prior to the sales.

You can probably keep track via this link. Doesn't look like Breathless has had a run there yet...

As a (near) complete aside...on my first foray as a (very small part) owner...I made about £20+ from the AU sale. Better than nowt, ofc. Good luck to Breathless Spirit in the new environment.

I would say that there is a difference between "market value" and "worth."

I agree that, by definition, any completed transaction establishes a "market value."

But "worth" is subjective as a couple of million to a billionaire might be well "worth" spending to pursue a mere bucket list ambition, while the same sum will represent more than a lifetime's earnings to most.

Tbh, talking about what other people choose to spend their money on has never interested me - I do like Vauban, though, he did me a turn when he won at Royal Ascot and that's the start and end of my angle on him! #itsalwaysallaboutME 😂

Isn’t that what I was saying? You can price something however you like, but it’s value to you isn’t the same as its value to others and if nobody is agreeing with you, you’ll never get the amount you want for it…

I like him too, but I don’t like him ( or any gelding !) a million pounds worth 😆 even allowing for how much better the prize money is.

Very possibly - I guess I was just clarifying my own exact take on the subject.

That horse was always a lousy jumper of hurdles in my book, but he was so good he still managed to win a Triumph despite flattening every other flight and reached an OR of circa 160.

Watching him win by the length of Ascot High Street back on the level was my highlight of that particular Royal meeting.

Barry Connell found out the hard way about paying too much for racehorses; Our Conor, Golantilla to name two not to mention the 12 yo he paid 180k for for a Grand National runner; Pineau de Re he had sold for 19k upped and won the race.
He changed his attitude, his latitude and modus operandi has Good Land, Marine Nationale and William Munny to show for it.
At least Vauban was already in Aus, so the heavy lifting was done.
He had race trials and race form so they knew what they were getting into; good for them.

Just logged in, checked "what's new" & saw How much??!!!

Ah, the old Yorkshire war cry thinks I. Well, I must admit to being somewhat confused when I saw it was about racehorses.
