Kay: Northern favourite

Kay: Northern favourite
Kay Is King Of Comics

Phoenix Nights star Peter Kay has been voted Britain's favourite comedian.

The Boltonian pipped Billy Connolly and Ricky Gervais for the title.

The survey of 10,000 people - believed to be the biggest comedy poll ever - was carried out by Jongleurs Comedy Clubs to mark its 21st anniversary.

The poll revealed the country is divided when it comes to humour.

Kay, star of Channel 4 show Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere, was number one in the north.

Connolly won the vote in Scotland, and while Lee Evans was number one in the south, Gervais was favourite in London and Wales.

Of earlier comedy favourites, only Tommy Cooper made the list - the likes of Eric Morecambe, Peter Cook and Tony Hancock failed to make the grade.

Jongleurs spokesman Chris Lambert said: "We were quite surprised to see so few legendary names in the top 21."

1. Peter Kay
2. Billy Connolly
3. Lee Evans
4. Ricky Gervais
5. Eddie Izzard
6. Jack Dee
7. Roy Chubby Brown
8. Graham Norton
9. Jo Brand
10. Jimmy Carr
11. Tommy Cooper
12. Bill Bailey
13. Dawn French
14. Frank Skinner
15. Steve Coogan
16. Al Murray
17. Lee Hurst
18. Harry Hill
19. Jasper Carrott
20. Bill Hicks
21. Lily Savage

"The survey of 10,000 people - believed to be the biggest comedy poll ever"
What, bigger than that carried out by Channel 4 for their "100 Funniest..." programme (in which Tommy Cooper came out on top)?

And it can't have been restricted to British performers as Bill Hicks appears in the list, so there really are some anomalies. Where the f*ck is Richard Pryor for starters?

I saw the end of Parkinson last night. Never seen the guy before but he looked good. Fortunately I didn't miss Sandra Bullock.

And the late Dave Allen too .

Peter Kay is priceless the reason he is such a hit is that he manages to appeal to everyone rather in the same way as , albeit with a long way to go to match him . Eric Morecambe did .

Jimmy Carr is very overrated in my book and he looks like one of the gangsters out of Wacky races very disturbing

Kay looked to be in a different class to Allen.

Allen was a comedian and he didn't make me laugh that much. Kay looks to be an all round entertainer.

I've only seen Peter Kay a few times, but he's very funny.

Unlike a lot of comedians of his generation, he doesn't come across as a cynical smartarse.

Dave Allen was ok, quite amusing, a sharp observer, but I've never quite understood the near adulation he receives from some quarters.

Seeing Tony Hancock mentioned brings back wonderful memories, brilliant comedian with immaculate timing.

Peter Kay is IMO the funniest followed very very closely by Dave Spikey, Al Murray, Patrick McGuiness and Lenny Henry with Ricky Gervais leading the chasing pack.

Kay is a funny man but from a pure stand-up point of view his routine is very very easy, just your basic observational humour.Bill Bailey is a far better stand-up comedian but is not as well known and wouldn`t appeal as much to the thick people who dominate all these sort of surveys.

Peter Kay is a genius. I think its because you realise that you do actually do the things he is making jokes about; for example on his DVD the wedding sketch and dancing up to the dancefloor. Makes me laugh everytime I watch it, which must be hundreds of times.

Kay's 'Live at the Tower' from Blackpool was hilarious - hardly a swear word in sight (maybe none), just observations on people's daftest moments, without, as is said above, a lot of cynical smartarsery.

We're so lucky in the UK to have such a variety of performers at a high level of ability in stand-up, sketches, multi-media, etc. Bill Bailey's marvellous, especially innovative with his use of background graphics, video, taped music, and live guitar and keyboard. Not to mention some of his songs.

I saw French and Saunders live, and they were also tremendously sharp.

But I am seriously annoyed not to see Lenny Henry and Chris Rock in there.
