Just wondering if anyone has one of those recently-advertised (on tv) HP printers which scans, copies, faxes, etc., and whether they're likely to break down more than just an ordinary printer? I quite like the idea of having one, especially since the free Lexmark chucked in with the desktop turned out to be crap, unusable, and I don't think I want one of those again. Any thoughts, folks?

Actchooally, I have just got one of those - HP Officejet 6310. But I've only used it for printing and faxing so far - hacen't had a chance to fine our how wiell it prints photos off.

I didn't choose it, the wonderful Roy (our Network Manager) did that!

Ah, so! Well, if you'd be so kaind as to let me know how it does perform, I might treat mesen to one when the foal dosh rolls in. I'm trying to slowly bring myself into the wunnerful world of technology, much as most of it tries its best to annoy the hell out of me!

Ma's got an all-singing, all-dancing Lexmark and it's pretty good. Don't ask me what model it is though!!

Bought a HP one about 4 years ago fo £99. Flat bed scanner sort as opposed to the fax feed. No problems at all. Decent at everything spectacular at none.

Silly arse that I am - the ad ran again tonight, and this IS a Lexmark! :shy: I don't know why I thought it was a Hewlett Packard. Anyway, I'd still be interested in anyone's thoughts on all-purpose machines. £99 isn't bad, is it?

I have one and its been very reliable for the past 7 years. THe only hting I would say is that the photo printing qualitiy is not great but then mine is 7 years old and I would imagine they have greatly improved things by now. I don't find the cartridges that expensive (but then I'm not Scottish!) and they last quite well too.

Thanks, all. I think I'll get one in the New Year, but if anyone has any really Good or Bad opinions on any makes, I'd appreciate knowing.

I like the photocopier option on these and I may try scanning, too. I must try to get a bit more au fait with all this techner - tochnic - er, complicated things - my efforts with a mobile phone are pathetic!

I love you too, jinnyj h:)

£40-odd for one black and one colour cartridge is expensive to me. Are you allowed to offset yours against your annual taxes?

I last paid about £11 for one but I bought it online and it has lasted me about 2 years now.

Er - what are taxes?

I'd been forewarned about the Dell printer before I ordered it but I needed a scanning & photocopying facility and this was thrown in free with the laptop we got for our daughter last Christmas. I thought I'd get a year or so out of the cartridges with normal usage but Mrs O's 6000-page theses for her recent project used up both cartridges half-way through the first thesis. I bought compatibles after that but they were on the dear side too and the PC doesn't fully recognise them, although the printer works fine.

Compare that with the compatibles I bought for my old Epson 440 - about £20 for half a dozen black and a couple of colour cartridges but they're looking a false economy as they don't work well, need very regular head-cleaning and don't last too long as a result.

Built-in obsolescence.

Taxes are wot I pay to keep people of your class in the style to which they are accustomed ;)

I've had three different makes and they all worked very well. The price of the colour cartridges is the thing to watch. You have to get your Dell cartridges from Dell and they are expensive. HP, Cannon and Epson all have cheaper inks.
You will not regret getting one Kri. Make sure it has stand alone photocopying.

Crikey Moses - forty squid for a cartridge? Thassalorramoney! Hmm, good points. Not something I'd have considered when purchasing. (What a little gem this forum is!)

Kri.
Most, if not all, printers are sold on the same principle as razors and razor-blades. It is the refills or renewals that make the money, not the hardware.

The last time I bought a stand alone printer i was beause replacing the ink cartridges on the previous one was more expensive than a new printer

I have one of those HP all singing all dancing things - it is OK nothing to write home about

£40+ for the pair (1xb/w + 1xcolour) but it's still pricey.

If colour isn't important to you you might be better off researching laser printers. They work out much cheaper per page (for b/w).

I'll check out the Which? site when I get home from work and get back to you.
