I've nearly finished the McCoy Autobiography, are there any other racing books you guys recommend? I've read the Charlie Brooks, Mick Quinn and Brad ones!

William Nack's biography of Secretariat includes the greatest description of a race I've ever read; a blow-by-blow account of his Belmont Stakes win that I guarantee will have the hairs standing up on the back of your neck.

Wild Ride - Rise and Fall of Calumet Farm, Inc, America's Premier Racing Dynasty

Ann Hagedorn Auerbach

Another brilliant read - really enjoyed this.

Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand
A tremendous read. [/b][/quote]
Over-rated.

Excellent in parts, dull in parts.

I've read that too, very good read. The chapter about Nijinsky at the end is a nice bonus.

Hey, did we make it into print in the fat bastards autobiography, lambournlass??!!

Never mind the horsey ones - I've recently read Stella Rimington's At Risk. It's a very good book, one I'd recommend highly - I reckon you'd like it too, LL. I know you're not so into the historical jobbies but I'm reading My Heart Is My Own - the Life Of Mary, Queen of Scots & that's pretty good too. Karen Slaughter's Indelible was good too, as was Live Bait by PJ Tracy. I thought Live Bait was very good - it was better than Want To Play, I thought.

SL - from what I remember there are references to the lads but cant remember to what extent - I'll have a look through again tonight. To be honest I found it a bit awkward to read as it described most of his sexual exploits from when he was a lad and the thought put me right off my coco!! Not nice. At the time of the RSPCA case, there was mention of 'staff he trusted but let him down', whilst he was away, effectively blaming them for the horses condition, like it happens within a week. Ho hum..............................

Yeah well, you know my opinion about that!! The man's a bastard, I tells ye....

(oh, and yes, I remember the retort to the member of staff who told him Zola had lost a rug & went to put it back on - wasn't it "fuck him, if he keeps losing his rug he can be left without"...?? Cue the RSPCA vist & suddenly it was the staff's fault.....tosser!!)

It's an interesting read that, PDJ. His writings about the horse aren't up to much, IMO, but the story behind the Magnier/Ferguson rift is really well done.

Bloody Foreigners by Robert Winder - very easy to read fascinating account of the history of immigration into Britain . Should be compulsory reading for the BNP.
