Would you believe it - the entire back page of the Racing Post today (ok, the entire back page minus tha adverts, before some smart alec starts!!!) is taken up with an article on Michael Jackson!!!!! The headline is pretty amusing - "Will he beat it?"!!!!!! It transpires that Gamebookers actually have markets on the outcome of his case, ffs! As one of the lads here siad, "I can't believe anyone is betting on the outcome of a paedophilia trial!" Markets are -

Michael Jackson to be found guilty

Yes 1/2
No 6/5

All bets void if found guilty on some counts but not on others.

Length of jail sentence if found guilty

1-5 yrs 17/20
6-10 yrs 6/4
11-15 yrs 19/4
16-19 yrs 13/2
20 yrs + 15/1

All bets void if no custodial sentence passed.

I can't believe that not only are someone pricing it up, but that the Racing Post are leading with it on the back page!! Somebody, somewhere, has a sense of humour....

I just thought it was a pathetic publicity stunt and Gamebookers should be ashamed of the margins to which they bet.

What next?

Will Kylie need to have a breast removed?

Yes 5/6
No 5/6

A few months ago someone came into my shop and asked me if they could have a price for Michael Jackson commiting suicide this year

"I can't believe anyone is betting on the outcome of a paedophilia trial!"

That's been the hallmark of the trial - the grave seriousness of the actual charges appears to have been lost amidst everything. One of the US commentators remarked that at one point the jurors were laughing; he was astonished at this given the nature of the trial.

forgetting everything else, the 15-1 for 20+ years is a good bet
If you look at US sentencing you regulary get burglars getting 150 years but due to their strange parole system they get out after 6 months or something. Considering how serious the charges are, if he is found guilty, I would be pricing up 20+ years as the favorite and 1-5 years as the 15-1 shot!

Yes, it is a pretty pathetic attempt to garner publicity but it did raise a few laughs in our place, at least - at the fact that the Racing Post gave it such importance as to lead with it.

Griffin - I had a punter come in the shop one day and ask me if he could have odds on the Queen Mother dying that same afternoon. People just want to bet on anything.

Reminds me of the spread firms quoting on how long the jury would be out in the OJ Simpson trial. Imagine how you'd feel if it was your daughter that had been killed and you had to put up with shallow piss like that.
