Why? Doesn't he read papers or watch the news? He's in a job where some of the most vulnerable in society congregate in vast numbers. I had a classmate die of leukaemia at 10, another one killed horse-riding when she was 17 and I was 13, and another kid I didn't know dragged to death by her pony, aged 12. I know the teachers were terribly upset by these incidents, but I don't think they wanted to give up their jobs because of such tragedies. Kids die from childhood illnesses and accidents, and they're vulnerable to attack from wrongdoers, too, so it's surely only a matter of time before some of the wicked things done to kids - getting stabbed, shot, abducted, raped, beaten up at home, to name but a few of the possibilities - catch up with one's school.
