I have just finished my contract with Transport for London and I'm looking to pick up some work closer to home.

I am a computer programmer and have various experience in programming/databases/networks and mostly building web applications.

I have noticed how wireless networks seem to be taking off, I've had one for about 2 years and it's joy being able to browse the net whilst sat in the garden.

I'm looking to start advertising that I can install a home wireless network for X amount of pounds, hopefully I can get enough home users per week to pay a decent wage.

What I need is some ideas of how to advertise this, what copy to place on the advert etc and advise on a good advertising ideas, anyone on this board experienced in this?

If so any help would be great, maybe I could offer my skills in exchange for your expertise.

If this offends anyone, I'm sorry and I'm sure it will get taken down.

Regards

Craig

ps. I forgot to add i'm in the Surrey area.

In the meantime, you don't do general painting and handymanning, do you, Craig? Only the old Mammy and me have a number of small, but tricky, jobs a fit young bloke could manage over a couple of days. Free beer and nosh thrown in (the accent on thrown) as well as at least £3.50 an hour.

Craig, my boyfriend set up our wireless network and at home and he thought the same as you, but he doesn't like people, so going into people's homes wasn't really for him.

You could always start by advertising locally, especially now Christmas is just round the corner. A website may help later too.

Best of luck in your venture.

Broad shoulders me Colin! :P

By the way well done for that nice 16/1 winner today Colin! B)

I'm a marketing consultant.

However, I don't usually consult with startups as they usually don't have a proper plan inplace (or money to pay me).

I'd suggest you get a clear idea of who's going to hire you, how much they'll pay and why they want to pay you in return for a wireless network (ie the benefits they expect).

Once you know who your target market is, work out who's already selling to them and how and where they're doing that (plus what they're charging). You need to know what your competition is so you know what your unique selling point is.

Once you've know what your market is and what your selling point(s) is/are, then it's time to think about how you're going to market and whether advertising is the right approach (there are plenty of other forms of marketing).

Hope this helps

if there is not much difference between here (middle europe) and uk , and i think it is not, then this looks a very good idea.
wireless access or wireless home networks will grow rapidly (because of larger broadband, lesser costs and many familys wanting to give their members access without having to open many accounts or make holes in their walls to connect their pcs)

as the demand is there, but not confined to certain areas (the rich quarters etc.) or people, best is to approach them via general public media.

a small announcement in your local paper may be a good start. Do it with a small picure or draw, and talk simple, because your costumers are the exact opposite of freaks.

elaborate three points, but short.
comfort (for those, who do not yet have the idea)
costs (for those, who would like it but think its hell of a money needed)
and simplicity (for those, who wish to get it but are deterred by the thought of working hours and days by themselves to install it).
give yourself a nice sounding, easy to memorate and communicate (so one costumer can easy tell it to others ) brand (dunno, "the wire killer" or something.)
give a 0-24 hotline or helpline (creates trust)
and go ahead!
