An ABCNEWS.com poll finds those are the standings when Americans are asked to name the country's greatest president.

Who's the greatest president?

Lincoln  20%

Kennedy  14

G. W. Bush  13

Clinton 8

Reagan 8

FDR 8

Its not clear when this poll was taken, or which Reagan it refers to given who was clearly running the White House in the 2nd term with the aid of her astrologer and mysterious talking dog.

It did however, send me off looking for another list composed by historians rather than the masses, which I'll reproduce from Askmen.com.  the various candidates were assessed according to;

Leadership,

Geographic expansion (a curious criteria I'd have thought, but I'm rather hoping its got more to do with the founding of the Union and is a laregly 19th century thing,  rather than any neo imperialist adventures)

Foreign Policy

Economic Growth

Legacy (this is why Dubya is apparently unable to be assessed)

1 - Lincoln

2 - Washington

3 - Roosevelt Franklyn

4 - Jefferson

5 - Eisenhower

6 - Monroe

7 - Roosevelt Theodore

8 - Truman (slightly puzzled by this one)

9 - Jackson

10 - Polk

5 + 3 = ?
