OK - trying to do my bit for the enviroment and bank balance by buying a smaller engine car (down from an S Reg Volvo V70 2.5 auto to an 09 Ford Fusion 1.6).

Get the online comparisions and excellent news - I can save about £50 a year!

Call the current insurers to ask how do I go about changing vehicles and how do they process the refund?

Answer - you have to pay an extra £4.50 a month till the end of the policy!

To be fair the bloke on the phone admitted it all sounded a bit crazy and that anyones maths would have to be pretty amazing to understand it (he didnt!).

So what were my options - pay the extra £5 a month for 3 months till renewal and then save £50 a year or cancel the policy (and still pay the £26 admin fee) and first months insurance with a new company of about £120!?

I have changed vehicle on a policy before with no issue. I'm sure they had this in the smallprint when you signed up with them

Your stuck with them now

Oh its def going to be in the small print (isnt everything!) but it turns out that they calculate it from when I originally took the policy (jan 11) so the difference between the two policies is £11 less but if they add on the £26 admin fee - hey presto.

Even if I cancelled it on Saturday (if I pick up new car then) i would still have to pay the £26 and another £120-£150 to another company for the privilege.

Its just annoying that the guy I spoke to admitted he didnt understand how they calculated the difference "i just put the numbers into a database" (!) and that trying to save money is costing me grrr

Tell the garage you can't afford to buy it now because it is going to cost another £200 you didn't know about and they may knock £200 off their price, worth a shot as they have monthly targets to meet and it's getting near the end of the month.

I could but they have already knocked £1500 off the forecourt price and given me £400 trade in - in the scheme of things £26 isnt that big a deal, its the principle!!
