My wife has a new ipad. We're tryng to set it up but are having some difficulty (she knows a lot more about this stuff than me).

Does it need a SIM card? Why? Can't it work without a SIM card? I thought SIM cards were just for phones. Is it so that the ipad can access the internet like a phone? Does that mean we have to take out a separate contract?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Not very helpful but best to just make a quick call to your nearest apple stockist, and they should be able to help straight away.

I have recently bought an Ipad and only use the wifi option. No problems at all. You need a separate contract if you want 3g or 4g.

If you want to use the Internet almost anywhere there's a signal then yes, you'll need a sim and a contract. However, I use my iPad with my iPhone and switch personal hotspot on the iPhone when I can't access wifi. Make sure your mob contract has an Internet bolt on, usually around £5 a month on top of your tariff - should give you unlimited acces. Otherwise you could run up a heft bill! Very rarely need to use the hotspot facility but it's useful to know.

I'm afraid that's kinda double-dutch to me!

Mrs O might understand and she'll probably get it all sorted her own way and in her own time. I was just trying to help her get started the other night as I'd got her the thing for Christmas. The soundbites so far suggest she's getting the hang of it now.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and helpful emails.
