Having trawled around Gib the day before I flew back last week looking for an ipod, I'm now wondering whether or not I should get the new Sony 6Gb Walkman instead. I flatly refused to pay the thieving bastards in Gib over the odds for an ipod, especially when you take into account that there is no VAT to take into account. After spending an hour or two abusing & mauling every shop assistant in Gib (pointing out that the things were cheaper to buy in the UK at a price inclusive of VAT!) I left empty handed. I nearly bought a nano at Heathrow airport today but something keeps making me resist - after all, if I'm going to pay £175+ for a bit of kit, it seems a little non-sensical to get one with only a 4Gb capactiy when I can get a smarter 6Gb machine for less (tbh, 6Gb is about as much as I need). As far as I can tell the main problem with the Sony machine is with the software being an absolutel nightmare, but most of the reviews I have read say that the Sony machine is better than the ipod, or at least preferable at the prices. Does anyone have experience of either/both machines? I'll be looking to pick one up at some point in the near future.

Whilst it is only cosmetic - IPod Nanos scratch if you so much as look at them. I also believe that there was quite a high failure rate in the early batch models. I don't know whether this has been remedied yet.

Dom, I bought a Creative labs Zen Sleek yesterday. At 20gb for £163 in Costco.
Obviously very early, but up to 18 hours battery life, and the quality is superb.

Have an Ipod Mini and having bought it in March of this year it has served me well, however over the past month or so the battery life is becoming worse and worse and is starting to annoy me, the Creative Zen is meant to have a much better battery life so i would advise that to be honest.

I got a new contract phone - the Motorola ROKR and it has iTunes on it. 100 songs to fit on the memory card too and the sound quality is perfect. Saves me having to buy an iPod.

If you're happy only having 100 songs. However, the ROKR is the only non-iPod device that can play songs downloaded from Apple's iTunes Music Store.

That's the point exactly, Gareth - I have the Sony Ericcsson Walkman phone which stores around 120+ songs on it (more with the memory cards). However, for things like travelling & going on holiday I'd like something I can store 1000+ songs on.

To be honest I'm not overly bothered with i-tunes; I have hundreds of CDs & would happily just upload them onto a MP3 player.

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably leave it until February to grab one but I'll look up the Creative Zen too, cheers Dave.
