Just wondering what the general thoughts of the Irish contributors are on this election which is surely a fascinating study of a Taoiseach's survival power when it is quite likely to subsequently emerge that he is up there in the Ray Burke school of dubious payments.

There's every chance he will win the election albeit with the likelihood of the remarkable concept of a Sinn fein coalition. But there is surely no way he can survive the storm after the weekend's events. Particularly when there is a bubbling layer of further rumours under the surface that are likely to explode at any minute which will finish him for good.

While I think it likely Bertie may lead the party through the election I am uncertain that he will survive as leader much past it.. Suspect the knives are being drawn by the aspiring leaders within Fianna Fail.. All of whom declaring unswerving loyalty at this time.

That said who know what further revelations will appear before polling day (anyone else hear the parade ring guy at the Curragh yesterday announce the poll day as the 23rd!!). Fianna Fail may yet regret their choice of election slogan.. Berties Team.. The media are out for the blood deprived from them last autumn so I don't think this anywhere the last of the revelations.

Then again to many in this country the crime is not the doing of the acts, its the getting caught. The greatest creation was the tribunal system by CJ.. a System by its nature that protects those who partake when called to answer to it..

Over a few shandies the other night I happened to hear a suggestion of some of the stuff that may be to come as regards Bertie.

It will finish him, that's for sure. But it's a matter of how long it can be delayed for. There's some shocking stuff going on behind the scenes. Certain elements of the media have been placated in return for leaks in relation to other stories. Tis a very murky world indeed.

BJ - here is a 66/1 shot for you.

The coalition is sworn in by Mrs McAleese in mid June. The respective leaders, Brian Cowan and Brendan Howlin pledge to work together to restore the faith of the electorate in government ethics.

ps..PM me the good stuff!

We have been laying bigger bets of a Fine Gael - Labour coalition and and Pat Rebbitte being the next Tainiste then any other market.

Enda has been ploughed into from 2/1 to EVS. I'm statrting to wonder shoul I be looking for a price for neither Enda or Berti neing Taoiseach.

Little Party Debate Limited Stakes

1st Trevor Sargent
2nd Pat Rabbitte
3rd Michael McDowell
Dist: 5l, 1/2l
Fav: Gerry Adams(PU)

Smooth success for the neatest man in Irish politics sticking to the agenda and scoring points eloquently. A few humorous remarks from Coinín, but too wrapped up in the pursuit of witisisims to make any genuinely cutting points. McDowell looked a little flustered early and stuck far too rigidly to his own agenda rather than sticking to the topic at hand.

After a vetinary inspection Adams was found to have gurgled throughout the debate. Atrocious performance from someone who should have excelled in this going. Failed even to object when Mark Little wound down the programme leaving Adams as the only one not to give a final appeal for votes. Looked tired, ill prepared and disinterested.

adams just awful. Rabbite won it for me. McDowell probably appealed to his constituency but wouldnt have tempted any swing votes. I dont think they will get enough to stay in power. Seargent just about par, but looks more and more likely that the Greens will be in government one way or the other.

Jaysus, Adams was awful. But again, his die hard supporters wont have have been swayed.

I don't understand why Gerry Adams, who is not seeking elected office and is elected in another jurisdiction was allowed on the show.

Bertie Ahern is fav to be next Taoiseach again. I presume its to do with an opion poll out tomorrow?

:(

FF - up five to 41
FG - down one to 27.
Lab - down three to 10.
SF- down one to 9.
GRE - up one to 6
PDS - 2

Confirmed on the 9.1 News, astonishing stuff..

Support for Labour seems to have collapsed.. on the back of a pretty good week for Rabitte (at least IMO), can't help but feeling has something to do with his fervent denial of a coalition with FF.. that certainly turned me off anyway..

To be honest, if I was a FF backer I would have ideally wanted them to creep up to around 38 or 39.. there is always the chance that such rapid gains will galvanize opposition voters come Thursday.. that said, it looks like we could be staring at 5 more years of B-b-b-ertie A-a-a-hern..

Ahern is now 1.7 to lay on betfair. I may get involved. polls this close to the election can be off use to both sides. It may drive people out to vote for change.
