I'm not into mobile phones. I use an old PAYG and top it up every two or three months x £20. I could count on one hand the number of texts I send in a year. I only use the phone when I really need to.

I got a call this afternoon offering me a "wonderful deal". I was just wondering if those of you who know about these things think it is a good deal.

18 month contract
£17.50pm for 13 months then £35pm for 5 months
Sony Ericsson 608i (I think) phone

gets me

400 mins per month, any time, any network
250 texts pm

Taken over the full 18 months, this works out at over £22 per month, which is more than double what I'm paying for what I use. I told the chap if he could do me the deal for £10pm for the 18 months I'd be interested.

Was it a good deal?

If £22 was more than double what you are paying now, surely £10 is more or less the same as you are paying so stay as you are or, do like I did and sling the bloody thing :P
Bet I am the only one on here who has no mobile, I appreciate that they can and are a necessity for some but surely, not everyone, I found it a bloody nuisance. ;)

Almost certainly not for someone who uses his mobile as little as you.

I once had a contract phone and conviced myself that I would never use more than the "free" minutes I got for c£18/month. However I don't think I ever got a bill of less than c£35.

You are also likely to cop for annoying add-ons like VAT, connection fees, insurance etc etc.

The phone I use at the moment is shite, but as long as I can make and receive calls/texts, I am happy enough on pay-as-you-go (£10 credit last me about a month).

Contracts are best for those that use their mobiles daily for work or who spend entire rail journeys yapping to friends about crap (when sitting near me on a train).

My wife kept on at me to have one and bought me one for Christmas, I send two texts to her which she didn't receive because her phone was switched off... never used it again. :(

The chap who phoned me said if he was ever in a position to offer me what I wanted he'd get back to me. I'm not expecting a return call :)

The big diff would be the number of calls available to me. I suppose I could find myself a mistress - the local guide dog association might have a database of possible liaisons - to waste the calls on.

At present my calls cost about 25p per minute so I'm very much like the TV ad:

"I'm stranded."
"OK" & hang up.

So the prospect of getting calls for just 6p per minute might appeal.

Thanks, Relkeel, for the mention of add-ons. I'll remember that if he ever does get back to me.

I'll hunt you down a deal that will be much better than that for much less - ie not as good a deal but much better suited to what you need, for probably the same as you are spending now on PAYT. Ill try to do something tonight :)

ok better late than never

You average £10 a month

W810i

W810i phone free (and its a good phone)

£1.99 line rental for 8 months, then 4 months at £30 (12 month contract)

Total of £135.92 over the year = £11.32 a month

but bear in mind you are getting a top phone, and 200 inclusive anytime xnet minutes + 75 inclusive text messages

Or this

LG Chocolate

Same tariff as above except free line rental for 8 months, total yearly cost of £120 = £10 a month

or this

Motorola v3

Same again but 99p for 10 months total; cost £69.90 = £5.83 a month

And last one

Motorola L7

Same deal as the v3

You can find cheaper deal, ie 12 months free or for 99p, but remember all deals nowadays are where yo pay the full line rental then every few months you submit a claim and get it refunded (details on the site), Carphone Warehouse are very unlikely to go but and therefore not pay you, personally I would ratyher pay slightly extra and know I will get the cash back!!!

I am lucky enough to get a handset and paid calls with my job.

However, if someone offers you a Sony Ericsson 608i for free, tell them to ram it right up their jacksie. It is a piece of sh*t.

Much appreciated, dvds2000.

I might take a run into the local Carphone Warehouse branch tomorrow.

I don't know enough about these things and I don't have time to listen to music etc due to work/leisure imbalance but I don't want to get involved in anything complicated and I don't want any nasty surprises at the end of a month. I don't want to have to claim anything back.

I'm a bit of a simpleton in such matters. I suppose the bottom line is that I'm looking for more minutes (for the same monthly outgoings) than O2 gives me.
