It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

I've heard it at least twice on the radio in the last 24 hours. I was thinking when I heard it this morning how the lines:
The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
fitted so well in the song.

It sounds a lot better than the 18/1 winner anyway.

How often do you get an 18/1 shot?

Surely more often in the states when compared to here.

After thinking the song was brilliant for a while, I now hate it.

I've heard it once, on VH1 - funnily enough I was out with friends & we were all saying how we hadn't heard it yet when it came on!

18/1? Tote monopoly...
Totopoly Brian?

Not heard it as yet but borrowed my dad's "Very best of The Pogues" after pursuading him to buy it a couple of years ago. Also see "Boys from the County Hell" as a classic Pogues song as is "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda".

Yes I suppose that they were American seeing as it's called Fairytale of New York. Never occurred to me!

How dim is that?

Seems the most regularly played Christmas Song on TV Music channels at the moment. At least 6 times already this week I've heard it.

I generally try not to get involved in slagging off boy bands, they serve some kind of purpose, and their ilk but when Ronan keating released his interpretation of this song - minus the coarse language, lest he offend some of his fanbase - they crossed the line.

Just dont get me started on the pseudo alcoholic McFadden. Connection, one Mr. L Walsh.

Now, I've upset meself.

Someone mentioned to me that they heard an interview with Aled Jones, who is still recognised at Arsenal games, where the crowd occasionally round on him chanting "you're not singing anymore"

I thought that was smart.
