BRAZIL'S 16LB BIG BABY

A woman in northeastern Brazil has given birth to the country's largest child, doctors have confirmed.

Healthy baby Ademilton tips the scales at 16.7lbs - about the weight of a six-month-old.

Doctors say they tried to persuade 38-year-old mum Francisca Ramos dos Santos to give birth naturally - but she opted for a Caesarian.

Rita Leal, director of the Albert Sabin Maternity Hospital, said: "Obviously the baby was born by Caesarean section. Both mother and baby are doing just fine."

One doctor at the hospital in Salvador, 900 miles northeast of Sao Paulo, said Ademilton "could truly be considered a giant baby".

But he is not the heaviest child ever born. That record is held by Tomassa Cipriani from Italy who's birth weight was 28.4lbs.

Mrs Santos has four other children, aged 9, 12, 14, and 15, who were born weighing between 7.7lbs and 11lbs.

Dr Leal said: "She knew Ademilton would be a big baby, but not this big.

"She, her husband and the hospital staff were caught by surprise."

The average weight for newborns in Brazil is 7.7lbs for boys and 6.6lbs for girls.

Jesus, Brian, it's got to be..... Nowt coming out of this body that is even a fraction of that size, I can assure you.....

Might have guessed what that would prompt, I suppose.....not that I'm going to dignify it with a response!

The baby's size was down to the mother being diabetic, apparently, and he suffered from fetal diabetes. Seems that if pregnant women are diabetic, they often give birth to whoppers. However, this is Brazil's biggest babe to date. Not so much a bouncing baby, as a great thud.

"Here comes the head, Pedro... phew... wipes, please, nurse... you got it?"

"I got it, I got it, it's a big - whoops! Er, sorry about that..."
