I'm not sure if you are using Vista or XP. You can try a system restore, or you could try (in XP) going into Control Panel, choosing Sound Devices and troubleshooting them. A possible solution would be to uninstall those devices, shut down the pc and let Windows detect new hardware when you reboot. The drivers should then install correctly. That's about the limit of my expertise I'm afraid, MR2!
I restored my 'audio' applications and now I can hear racing commentaries through the SL website. But its vision only for programmes on BBC iplayer and everything else - any thoughts, MR2
Single-click the Start menu.
Single-click Control Panel.
Single-click Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices.
Single-click Sounds and Audio Devices to launch the Sound and Audio Devices properties.
On the Volume tab, locate the text labeled "Device Volume" and place a check mark next to the text labeled "Place volume icon in the taskbar."
Single-click Apply.
click Device Manager in the window then Sound Video and Game Controllers
If any of your audio devices have a red cross beside them this indicates a disabled driver. Right click it and select Enable
If there is a yellow ? or ! beside it there could be a driver problem so try reinstalling it by right clicking the audio device and then selecting Uninstall, then OK.
Restart your PC and Windows will automatically reinstall the correct driver.
While you are at it write down the model and make of your sound card, locate the manufacturer's website and see if you can find a newer driver there.
Same thing happened to me a couple of times last year. Diamond Geezer's solution did the job, allthough I think I installed the driver from a disk rather than picking it up automatically from a reboot. I had a similar problem with a printer not being recognised and all I did was uninstall and reboot which worked fine.
Using all your advice, and not precisely the route I chose but:
I brought up device manager, clicked on devices, sounds and then Realtek (my sound application). Right clicking this I went to troubleshooting until coming across 'rool back to previous driver'. This did the trick.
