Jamie Spencer Retires

I suspect he has quit before he was pushed.

There was a throwaway remark on C4 either yesterday or on Saturday about his jaikit being on a shoogly peg. (Not those actual words.)

I was a little unclear in OP... He will be riding until the end of the season.

Wasn't that as they were going down for the start of the International?

Also, as far as I understood, wasn't he only on a two year contract with Qatar in any case? I can't see why he'd be pushed if he's to see out his contract.

Perhaps Qatar genuinely believe his brains are more valuable than his skills whilst Spencer is happier to keep his feet on the ground. Presumably with a very comfortable package.

Press release through Qatar Racing;-

"This is a fantastic opportunity and if I have learned anything in my racing career it is that you should take such opportunities when they come along. As much as I love race riding, it is not something I want to do for the rest of my life and while I'm not necessarily ready to retire now, I feel at a stage when I am ready for a change. I really enjoy being part of the Qatar racing team, working with Sheikh Fahad, David (Redvers) and everyone in the team, and so the opportunity to continue that and at the same time start the next chapter in my career appealed to me. This has been a big decision and not one that I have taken lightly. My priority is my family, and thinking of them and their future has played a key part in my decision. I feel I still have a lot to give to racing, and not just as a jockey. I would like to thank all the owners and trainers..."

He is obviously happy with the deal-I would imagine if he wasn't there would be no shortage of offers.

As a young jockey he looked really good,
His year at ballydoyle was a distaster and afterwards he has been a bad jockey for the qualities he has.

He has had amazing jobs for jockey riding so badly for such a long time.

I'm sure it will be a very lucrative deal for him and it may be a diplomatic solution all round to 'kick him upstairs'. It happens.

It's a shame such a talent as a younger jockey ended up so inept.

Im not one to obsess over jockeys, although Ryan is a big big bonus these days, but Frank Spencer was always quite a bit of a negative for me.

Another interesting - almost throwaway - comment from Dettori today:

"No doubt the truth will come out in the next few days (or was it weeks)?"

(Or as close as dammit to that.)

Andrea Atzeni is a good replacement but that doesn't mean Spencer was a bad jockey.

He's probably one of the best hold up jockeys ever and his method of riding totally misunderstood by disgruntled punters.

Some may disagree with that but you only need look at who he has ridden for in the last couple of weeks and it has got to make you think either you are wrong or the dozens of trainers he has ridden for haven't got a clue what they are doing.

His style of riding will always be open to criticism basically because most puters don't even try to understand race riding.

When it's one size fits all race riding then I do understand that it is not going to get the best out of every mount. Thats not great race riding in anyones book surely. He's not quite that one dimensional of course but certainly too much for me

And like most punters I would much rather be on a jockey who can dictate or stay up with pace (Cauthen genius) than someone who's going to find trouble too frequently

I might not understand race riding but I know what the lack of a plan b is

Cauthen was brilliant I'll give you that but your one size fits Clive?

You look back at Jamie Spencer's last 40 rides and see how many he held up out the back door?

It is a complete fallacy that he holds up every horse and has only one way of riding.

You'll find most of those he hold up out the back door are long shots and the hope is his style might just bring out something in them because they have tried everything else...so they book Jamie......occasionally it works but most of them wouldn't win a donkey derby let alone a horse race.
