As I sat regally on the throne this morning at 7.45, I was wondering why our little Heinz was barking. He's usually quiet and only barks if he hears someone coming to the house. By the time I'd completed the royal business, Mrs O had taken delivery of a parcel the size of a telephone directory. It was for me but I hadn't ordered anything online this year. Nor was I aware of annoying anyone to the point they'd want to send me a bomb.

It turns out it was my 2008 Ladbrokes diary. Their liveried version of the Racing Post desk diary. It struck me that it was probably some years since I got more pocket diaries than I could share round the family and the only other one I got this year was from a firm I consider to be cheats, which went straight into the bin.

Maybe I've punted more with Ladbrokes this year than before - and I'm well in credit to boot - but fair play to them. This is one diary I might not only keep; I might even use it.
